I finally stopped in here for lunch after years of eating at the Mexican seafood restaurant that's located at the other end of the parking lot. The entrance is a bit off the beaten track, in an old building at the back of the parking lot. The layout is nice, with the bar up front and a casual but nice-looking restaurant behind the bar. Food is served at the bar and at the tables in the bar. It has a nice, lively feel at lunch. However, like most downtown LA spots, it's probably more deserted at night.

The menu has a nice selection, with pasta, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and other items. I had a turkey melt, which was loaded with sauteed peppers and onions. The accompanying garlic fries were absolutely loaded with big chunks of fresh garlic. It's definitely better than the typically brewpub food. The service was prompt and friendly, despite a hectic lunch crowd.

In addition to several types of Weiland brews on-tap, Sierra Nevada PA, Murphy's Stout, and a few others are on-tap. About 15 bottled beers-including white, red, and blue Chimay-are available. Weiland's Amber Ale was nice and somewhat reminiscent of Red Seal. The IPA was enjoyable but not outstanding. I'll be heading back to Weiland for the occasional Friday lunch with a beer or two.

I was working in downtown and I remembered seeing this place on beerfly, so I thought I'd check it out.

It's easy to find on the South side of 1st, between Los Angeles and Alameda. There is a parking lot right in front, which charges $5 (Effing Downtown...), but they give you $3 back if you stay less than an hour and validate your ticket. I ran over the hour mark as I was finishing eating, so I spent another 45+ minutes nursing another beer to get my money's worth.

Atmosphere: The place looks nice, light wood bar and tables, agitated concrete floors, and a stack of kegs off to the side. There was a smallish restaurant behind the bar area, but most of the patrons sat out front. The crowd was 99% after work and there was an older couple drinking chardonnay with ice. The music was a smattering of classic rock. You could hear it, but it wasn't loud.

Service: The bartender was friendly and attentive and the rest of the wait staff seemed to be taking care of their customers as well.

Selection: Four taps of their own beer, along with Paulaner O-fest, Newcastle, Great White, Murphy's, and one other beer that I don't remember and I wasn't excited about. They also had at least 30 bottles ranging from pretty good, Chimays, Anchor Steam, Pilsner Urqeell, Fat Tire, to blah stuff like Tecate and Asahi. Their beers, I tried three, were quite good.

Food: I ordered a burger with swiss (they also had bleu cheese and brie, as well as the option of a French roll or sourdough), which was tasty.

Value: Three beers and a burger for $15. That ain't not bad.

This is the place to go when in Downtown. The patio of Bonaventure Hotel might be sexier, but everything else about Weiland Brewery beats the BBC hands down.
