Tokyo Black is a genuine Porter with extremely rich taste and creamy top. The smoky flavor that comes from roasted malt combines nicely with the pleasant bitterness of hops.

Poured into a stone nonic.
A: Black with a 1 finger creamy, khaki colored head and carbonation bubbling throughout the body.
S: Big vanilla overhang with coffee, an irony dried blood tinge, wood, caramel, non-lactose centric milk note, and honey roasted nuts. Odd and complex, but makes me very interested to drink it.
T: As though they mixed the nose with club soda, all of the nose but coming through much lighter with a generic roasted wood taste dominating. There's more vanilla in the finish, but not quite enough flavor overall. Kind of a big let down.
M: Smooth and creamy at first but goes into a club soda mouthfeel quickly with a little old graham cracker residue feel in the mouth after swallowing.
O: I'm always interested to give things from Japan a shot as I think there's a lot of potential there, but this one fell short in the taste in mouthfeel. I can't account for quality considering the distance this beer must have traveled, but as it is in my glass it still has distance to go.

Thin dark brown pour, small khaki head fades quickly. Roasted malts give it a coffee aroma, some bitter chocolate. Taste buds agree, a bit thin, nicely carbonated.

Very interesting Porter. Slightly off flavors, but they don’t detract too much from the flavor profile. Some bitterness but not acrid. Complex malt flavors. Slight “rubberyness”

May 2014: 350 ml can, ABV 5%, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Black colour, large tan head. Nice roasty aroma, notes of coffee, dark unsweetened chocolate and woodwork. Dry roasty flavour, not "robust" but nicely balanced, notes of mild coffee and burnt breadcrumbs, hint of dark unsweetened chocolate. Moderate hops. Enjoyable.

11.8 oz can exp date stamped 23/10/20 into a Kolsch-style glass at Lat 14 Asian Eatery.
L: Pours black with a 1/4" light khaki head that has ok retention, goes to edge foam, light carbo bubbles, light sticky lacing.
S: Sweet candied malts, very highly dark roasted grains, light chocolate, distant dark bread, root beer.
T: Dark roasted sweet malts, char, coffee, dark chocolate, dark fruits, a hint of raisins, dark bread crust. The grains are roasted to the point of being gently smokey. Roasted notes linger. It is very lightly rich.
F: Fairly smooth med to med-heavy bodied with a medium long drying finish.
O: A straight ahead no-frills roasty Porter with char and chocolate that mingle in the center. Lightly sweet at first, it finishes fruity and dry and is gently bitter. Really nice tastes and feel. It is very good in its style.

An excellent porter, with a subtly smoky flavor. Highly recommended, and an excellent value in Japan (280 yen a can).

I'm very comfortable saying this is a fine beer. It's smooth, well balanced with a good flavour. A solid porter that anyone can try.

Deep clean chestnut body. Garnet at the corners. Substantial fuzzy off tan head. Swells then recedes but remains at about a quarter inch.
Nose is kind of nutty and sweet. Creamy mild chocolate as well.
Kind of generic but decent. Roasty/toasty with a decent amount of char and bakers chocolate. Kind of plummy and weak on the finish though.
Follow through is all bitter char and that kind of tinny stonefruit situation.

Bought it at Susan’s Wine shop in Santa Fe, NM.
Poured from a can into a tulip glass. Deep rich brown with good head and lacing. Smell and taste of light chocolate and vanilla. Bit of a mocha finish. Not bad but probably not something to seek out.
