Our tribute to the Scottish Highlands, this beer offers a gorgeous garnet color joined by the aroma of ripe plums and freshly-baked biscuits. The rich, full-bodied texture reveals notes of roasted chestnuts and caramel in the smooth single-malt style brew. Balanced with just the right amount of hop character, this beer delights with crisp alcohol finish.

Pours a dark brown color. Thin tan head dissipates rather quickly leaving no residual head. The lack of head is disappointing.

Smell is a rather subdued aroma of stone fruits - prunes and plums with a hint of malts. Appears sweet on the nose. Rather underwhelming.

Taste has notes of sweet plums and prunes initially giving way to a bland bread-y malt backbone. Slight bitterness on the finish cuts the sweetness somewhat. You really just end up with a very sweet raisin flavor. Its a bit watery.

Feel is light and drinkable. Amazing how thin and light this beer is for an 8.5 ABV - and thats not necessarily a good thing. Medium carbonation.

Overall this beer is just OK. I wouldn't drink it again, there are just too many other good scotch ales out there.

Although it looks fine and smells ok, this is one of the worst craft beers I've ever had. Like other reviewers, I thought it had a very odd sour taste that made it virtually undrinkable. I ordered it at a restaurant and the waitress seemed a bit surprised by the order. Perhaps they just do not sell much of it and it was far past its prime.

12 oz. bottle with F6 notched on the label - brewed with Pacific NW hops. The beer is deep brown with crimson flashes, low in carbonation, and topped with a two-finger, fluffy tan head that sticks fairly well. Smells of whiskey (bourbon, hint of scotch), a touch of sourness a la oud bruin, and a late earthiness. Earthy and malty on the palate, sweet, with a touch of green hops. There's also slight oxidation and some noticeable alcohol that makes the beer a bit too hot. On the palate, it is medium in body, carbonation and finish. My sample tastes a bit soured, but it could be an old bottle; either way, make sure to let it warm up plenty before serving.

Better than most of the standard Arcadia brews. Dark amber / brown-ruby. Nice firm head retention, lightly tanned. Smells quite malty, with a nutty, caramel, toffee, and chocolate flavor that melds together wonderfully. Noticable alcohol in the flavor, and mouthfeel, becomes a bit phenolic, but light. Medium to firm body that remains quite drinkable. The sweetness could use a bit more hopping to contribute balance and character. Finishes a bit sweet and a bit rough. Roughness from harsh carbonation and alcoholic strength without the depth to mask.

Very good scotch ale. Pours a nice dark brown with reddish highlights into my DT tulip. Nice, tan head, not much lacing.

Smells very nice. Tart, citrusy fruits, sauvignon blanc wine scents, funky cheddar, leather, cedar, spice, nuts, vanilla. Complex and interesting.

The taste is fruity, alcoholic, leathery, spicy, cedary. Very white wine like. Unusual but very nice.

Mouthfeel is rich and full. Very, very good.

Drinkabilty is very good. A good starter scotch ale, or easy standby for scotch ale fans.

Originally reviewed August 10, 2005. 12 Oz Bottle. Slightly murky ruby brown pour, with a rich creamy, faded tan head. Slightly bourbon, rice and port aroma. Flavor is mostly of slightly alcoholic plain caramel malt and brown sugar, backed with a peculiar but not unpleasant barbecue sauce note, a touch of ketchup, and some dusty malt. Palate is sugary, backed with a light butterscotch and raisin flavor. Alcohol dominates the backend and the aftertaste. Light nutty smack.

This brew pours an opaque brown almost black color. The head is three-fingers in height, billowy, and rocky. The aroma is of caramel and cream. The taste is of caramel, toffee, cream. The mouthfeel is amazingly smooth and on the fuller side of medium bodied. Overall, this is a very solid brew. I will certainly have this again.

appearance: The pour creates a .2" light than head that soon becomes just a ring around the snifter. The beer is a dark, reddish brown in color.

smell: Pretty subtle stuff going on. The generous hop aroma is probably the most prevalent. Under that I get a caramel like sweetness, with just a little chocolate hiding. A couple people mentioned cola, and they were right. There's a peaty, earthy scent...very light...that reminds me of the mulch we spread over the garden. Upon taking a big whiff, some slight ethanol tingles the nostrils.

mouthfeel: The carbonation is medium, and the body is light for the style...between light and medium.

taste: Definate charred hardwood...Tennessee whisky or Scotch flavors after the initial sip. Pretty tame, a little watery and bland even. Some light sweetness in the form of caramel and chocolate, and the slightest butterscotch note. Light ethanol fumes. No hop flavor, and just a light bitterness in the finish.

drinkability: Not a bad beer, but pretty average and uninteresting.

Brought a bottle back from my trip to Madison, think it came from Woodman's.

Currently, the bottle is labeled "Arcadia Ales" and contains the illustration of a castle. It must be a new bottle, not sure if the recipe has changed.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours dark, minimal head, reminiscent of syrup. Smell is nothing to write home about, but taste and mouthfeel are wonderful. Borders on overly sweet, but full-bodied malts are enough to keep it balanced.

Overall, I think this is an exceptional and robust beer. Much better than the current scores would indicate.

12 oz bottle purchased at the brewery.

Dark brown color but enough light gets through to tell that it is crystal clear. Looks almost like a flat Coca Cola. Thin tan head that turns into a halo around the outside of the glass rather quickly. Smell of roasted malt with some caramel sweetness. Taste of mild malt and toffee flavor but lacks any real kick at first. About halfway down flavors of raisin and a touch of smokiness comes through. 7% alcohol shows itself and gives a nice warming feeling to the finish. No bitterness at all and no aftertaste is left by the dry finish. My first impression was not very good but as i drank it improved some.

Poured into a Pint Glass

Appearance - Dark brown with an very dirty brown head, along with a good amount of lacing along the sides. Almost has the appearance of an Imperial Stout

Smell - Very rich peated scotch, caramel, toffee, yeasts and sweet malts. The malt is very strong with this one.

Taste - Robust caramel, toffee, scotch, yeasts and malts. Very sweet tasting even by Scotch Ale standards thanks to the strong malty backbone, and being incredibly delicious at the same time.

Mouthfeel - Fairly thick body but free from carbonation, so this feels incredibly creamy and it goes along with the flavor perfectly

Overall - Perhaps the best scotch ale I have ever had because it does so many things right with it's flavor and body, along with the rich aroma that comes along with it. I can't wait to try more from Arcadia Brewing!

12oz. bottle

Pours a dark chestnut brown with a small tan head that thins. Mild, speckled lacing on the glass.

Caramel malty, earthy aroma with a nice nuttiness, a slight smoky smell, and a hint of heather. Herbal hops are also detectable.

Malty and nutty upfront with a light, pleasant smokiness. Mild bitterness and herbal hop flavor and a hint of heather. Finishes with a slight lingering nutty flavor and hop bitterness.

Full body, mild carbonation.

A solid and very drinkable Scotch ale. Happy to have discovered this nice domestic rendition of an under-represented (and under appreciated)style.

Clear, but very dark ruby color. Quick head and foam. Seems close to what most other Scottish ales I've had.

Heavy toast, a little roast, and caramelized plums on toasty muffins.

The roast is heavy on the front of the palate, But the middle has a great combo of roast and toast malt flavors come together. The two flavor categories push out some very bready, muffiny flavors with a caramelized sweetness.

The palate is malty, a little sweet, and somewhat syrupy. You get a little warmth on the finish.

Dark reddish brown mahogany edges, long lasting sticky tan foam that never dies down completely.

Complex malt aroma, brown sugar, figs, crushed acorns, fall leaves. Sweet with a light toffee caramel vibe happening. Drizzled over them acorns.

Burly malt flavors, some fruity yeast notes, plum and fig, some dry toastiness that lingers. Dry woody finish, lightly sweet and vaguely boozy toward the end as it warms up. Medium bodied, slightly astringent with a bigger sip. Still fairly smooth. Overall it a good Scotch Ale, and worth another try.

Nice mouthfeel, kind of heavy on the tongue. Darker than I'm used to with Scotch ales, but really good taste, once it warmed up a bit. .
