i was sure i had enjoyed one of these before, years ago when it was newer, but apparently not. anyway this is real cool stuff, bottled in april of 2016 pretty old now more than five years, courtesy of claystation, i was pumped to see how this has done with the extended ageing. a nice dark pour on it, leather brown, an indicator of things to come, with a fizzy head from the bottle, some sediment near the bottom, and pretty decent viscosity. it smells like an old saddle, but freshly polished, or a baseball mitt, or an old mans hat, its woody and tobacco forward, earthy and toasted, like a well chewed cigar, and it has some obvious astringency now, a red wine vinegar character, not sure if it was always sour, but a lot of the casey beers have tended to go pretty acidic over time, and this one is right there too, although not volatile and harsh, still appealing in every way, just not sure if this was sour when it was fresh or not. the flavor is great, dried fruits like fig jam on dark toast, raisin, bourbon, maple, molasses, hazelnut, chestnut, and musty basement. the bacterial side takes over any saison type yeast esters and so this drinks pretty sour, lactic, and with a little bit of a vinous property, really deep and complex, and i like the little bit of appreciable alcohol on the exhale. i would have loved to try this fresh, but its holding up better than a lot of their other old ones and i am excited to have a couple bottles of this left in the cellar. everyone around our tasting table last night loved it too, a different kind of take on the style at this point, but wildly unique, really autumnal and layered.
edit: had a bottle from what must have been the next release, from february of 2017, last night, also courtesy of claystation i believe, doing amazingly well. a little less tart and tangy and vinegar-like than the one reviewed above, definitely more saison vibes now, more nuance to the yeast, way less bacterial, although not without a little lemony tartness that plays oddly well with the dark grain. a dry coffee note in the middle here, dusty soil, leather, bretty funk, and quite a bit of oak, a freshness to the oak coming through even too, not nearly as vinous as the older one, although no less mature overall. quite a lot more drinkable too, without the acid, woody and weighty but also nicely carbonated, cocoa and fig on the finish. really wildly unique beer, and way different than the one from 2016. delicious this time of year! increasing overall score slightly...

A 750ml corked and caged bottle, bottled on 14th April 2016. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass.
Appearance: A cola brown colour with an orange hue, and a one finger tanned head that settled slowly to a thin cap while leaving some nice lacing.
Aroma: Tart, cherry, plum, red grape, oak, caramel, lemon zest, and a splash of herbal notes.
Taste: Sour, tart, lemon zest, herbal, cherry, plum, red grape, vinous, oak, caramel, and dark malt notes.
Mouthfeel: Medium to light bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Haven’t had the opportunity to try many Bière de Garde’s, but this was an enjoyable dark sour beer with a balanced malty, tart, and fruity mix.

750ml bottle $20 dated 2/24/17. Pretty dark in color, more than I expected, dark brownish-red I guess. Decent head. Aroma is weird, first a flanders red type aroma, then some stinkiness and funk. Slightly tart flavor, grain, sour on the finish. Almost has a cherry-like flavor to it.

Bottled 4/14/16
Khaki head, dark brown color.
Not a typical bdg. Very sour. Tart cherries, oak, and spice. Fruity. Not much French characteristics are present due to the sour.
Dry. Champagne like feel.
Decent, but definitely off style.
