its really cool casey and small batch got together for a brew, it makes sense, as i think small batch was one of (if not) the first to carry casey bottles. its a biere de garde base, packed with hand picked balaton cherries, and there are obviously heaps of cherries on this, as the nose is super fruity and tangy, mouthwatering, really beautiful aroma. i was surprised to see it so dark in the glass, i dont know why i assumed a saison base, but i like the maltier brew underneath all the fruit, i think it gives it somewhat of an oud bruin character, especially with all the acidity thats here, more complex and layered than i think the saison would have been, and i think a better base for all these cherries. a root beer sort of color and lots of fizzy lively head. aroma of pulped up fresh cherries, tangy and raw, with a fruit vinegar and red wine complexion, tannic and woody too, mature and really acidic. the flavor is a bit more sour than i think it needs to be, which might be on me for waiting awhile to open this one, but its downright bacterially harsh for a moment, especially when it warms up, which really limits drinkability in a beer i otherwise want to pound. the fruit here is awesome though, lots of it, really fresh, and adding to the pucker while also back sweetening it a little bit. i get notes of cola and oak, red wine and port, dry cocoa powder and bran muffin in the malt, and still some wheat i reckon giving it a little body. awesome piquant dry finish, amazing rushing carbonation, and a lot of complexity in this, still funky and bretty too, just more sour than a lot of the other casey beers i have had. a very cool joint effort on this one, happy that this exists. good enough to go buy another one if there is still some around...
