BOTTLE: 750ml format with brown glass and a wirecage over a cork. Classy understated label art; this could easily be mistaken for a wine by uninformed consumers. "Triple Crown Bottled 3/29/17."

6% ABV. "Ale aged in oak barrels with blackberries."

Served chilled into a teku glass.

HEAD: ~7cm in height. Pale whitish pink colour. Frothy but not creamy. A biteen thin, but I guess that plays to the delicate vibe of the appearance. Leaves wisps of inconsistent lacing on the sides of my teku as it recedes; retention is a good 6-7 minutes.

BODY: Light depleted red of average vibrance. Translucent and quasitransparent. No yeast/lees are visible within (at least not from the first pour from the bottle).

Appears aptly carbonated. Far from unique looking for a blackberry ale, but certainly inviting and appropriate for the style.

AROMA: A bit jammy, hitting on blackberry, raspberry, redcurrant and blackcurrant. True to the "Casey Family Preserves" series, this is the beer equivalent aromatically of your grandma's homemade berry preserves/jams. The oak is reticent and not particularly vivid, unfortunately...you have to search to identify it.

There's a bit of tartness here but no real sourness or bacterial twang. Not a funky brew nor an acidic one based on the aroma.

Aromatic intensity is average. Very pleasant and inviting for a fruited ale, nailing the berry - though I can't help but crave more. Maybe more berries should have been used? I'll hold off until I taste it...

No overt hoppy or yeasty notes are detectable.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Tart berries are at the fore, but I doubt the majority of drinkers in a blind tasting would identify them as blackberry specifically. I get raspberry, redcurrant, and blackberry. No blackcurrant to my taste, but the jamminess of the brew renders the berries indistinct, possibly to the beer's detriment.

Acidity is above average, helping the berries sing. But as I feared based on the aroma, the berries could be far more vivid and expressive. Depth of flavour is good but not great. Maybe more berries are the answer, or more or less aging in barrels. Maybe aging in cabernet sauvignon barrels would help amplify the jamminess to better effect.

In any case, the blackberry is actually at its best right on the finish and into the brief aftertaste, hitting the drinker with some smashed blackberry tartness.

A little sour - maybe a 2/10 in terms of intensity. Pleasantly so, though; it's not a puckering lactobacillus bomb by any means. No microflora or brettanomyces complexity here; I think this was all lacto and pedio.

It's actually a little dry and a little coarse, but it remains refreshing in spite of dragging a bit on the palate in the late second act. Light to medium-bodied. Not sticky like many jammy beers. Not boozy, astringent, harsh, gushed, hot, or stale. But it isn't as fresh as it could be, and more softness and delicate lightness would help improve it.

Well-built for a blackberry fruited ale, even if some drinkers will find it uncomfortably on the fence between a straightforward fruited ale and a committed sour ale. I'd like to see them go big on the bacteria and bring in some microfloral nuance or scrap the bacteria and go bigger on the fruit.

Flavour duration is well above average. Flavour intensity is mild.

OVERALL: Casey is easily one of the best breweries in Colorado by my estimation (and that's no small feat in what is possibly the best state for beer), but as with many of their ales I find this good but not great - and probably not worth its lofty pricetag. I wouldn't go out of my way to nab another bottle and it's not up there with the best fruit ales or wild ales, but it's inspired interesting work that will please even the most discerning of drinkers. Another solid effort from a relatively nascent producer, and one that's well worth trying once if you can stomach its price. Drinkable fare that would pair well with salad.

Drank wonderfully out of a teku, but a tulip would also be suitable.
