2010 Groucho Bottle

A: Pours extremely dark and thick with a decent head, and some lacing as well

S: This is was one of the worst smelling stouts I have ever come across. It had way too much dirty ashtray, smoke, and some tobacco.

T: Sometimes after the aroma you can be put off and then be pleasantly surprised by the taste, but this did not deliver. It tasted of extremely bitter dark chocolate, tobacco, ash, and astringent roast coffee.

M: I was impressed with the mouthfeel though, it an extremely rich, thick, consistency to it, and also some light carbonation.

O: Overall, I would say they over did it on the roast barley, carafa III, and black patent. It just was undrinkable. I had to pour out my glass, this was like kissing a chain smoker! I dont know what they were thinking while tasting this, but who knows maybe there was too much of roasted barley added in the mash. I am usually generous with my ratings but with this one I couldnt do it. Maybe this was just a bad batch because I know I am in the dissenter position.

L - Pitch black with two fingers of light brown head

S - Chocolate, coffee, cherries, wood, oak, vanilla, roasted malts

T - Chocolate milk meets iced coffee. More vanilla, some black licorice, black cherries, ongoing dark chocolate.

F - Thick, but fluffy and comfortable. No alcohol.

O - Superb unflavored Imperial Stout. Robust flavor, easy drinkability, complex. This is the beer you're looking for.

Pour is nearly pitch black, big frothy mocha head with great lacing. Aroma is super nutty, getting plenty of almonds and hazelnut. Hints of roasted malt, chocolate and cold pressed coffee. Super rich taste, plenty of almonds, sweet malty profile with a splash of milk chocolate and lacto. Suprisingly full out mouthfeel, thick and chewy. Fantastic beer, surprised more people don't talk about this.

Pours pitchy and oily. A dark tan/khaki head forms, but it's not really a showpiece. Sweet, chocolatey malt whopper balls. Creamy cocoa, mallow. Licorice vapors give notice to the alcohol content. Toasted nuttiness, berry and even a banana fruit aroma.
The coffee flavor in this is subtle, clean, cold-pressed. Roast is minimal, or at least brought into equilibrium by what I imagine is a mosaic of blueberries, hazelnut, raisins, and chocolate.
Silky, smooth texture not without a dry, boozy port like finish. Reminds me of Rasputin I get on nitro, but this is from a can.

In review is a 2012 vintage.

A - Pitch black pour with a thick toffee colored head.

S - Dark chocolate, cream, and licorice aroma. Mild astringency.

T - Based on the age - Molasses, licorice/anise, dark chocolate, cream. Nice lingering dark chocolate bitterness with a little bit of sugar molasses on the finish.

M - Full medium body, slippery, sticky on the lips.

O - Good, but I let this bottle sit too long.

Its long been a want of mine and I got to try a 2009 and 2014, side by side. At its core there seems little change only the mellowing of age. The nose is classic stout with char, smokey embers, chocolate malt, oats and coffee.

The flavor delivers that same classic stout but with a nice balanced assertiveness. This has nice coffee, embers, charred oats, chocolate malts, dryness and roast. The feel is not particularly viscous and lightly dry.

Here is the review of a 2012 one pint Imperial Stout Trooper, thanks to My Beer Cellar.

Look: Upon first pouring it, the beer gives a hint of brown and after it filling the glass the drink gives a deep hue of black.

Smell: As soon as I opened the glass I got a huge kick of chocolate. After the first whiff the remaining smell was some chocolate and mainly a lot of roasted coffee.

Taste: The first taste gives more coffee and less chocolate detected opposed to the smell. As the drink has warmed up to a point nearer room's temperature I have been tasting more chocolate, but still mostly coffee.

Feeling: A smooth drink that goes down the hatch without a kick to it regarding the alcohol content. The drink remains a thicker stout that is best after a moment in your mouth to fully enjoy the flavor.

Overall: Nothing needed to say other then I am so happy that I was able to find a seller of this 2012 vintage drink in late 2016! Over the course of your beer drinking career I would strongly recommend that you should purchase one of these at some point.

Very dark and viscous used motor oil with a nice, dense, dark tan froth, leaving layers of lace.

Smell is roasty nuts, pumpernickel, soy sauce, and milk chocolate. A little smoothie fruit, thinking strawberry-banana with yogurt, arises as it warms.

Super tangy roasted nuts is the primary flavor profile, with chocolate covered banana, a little spicy hop, and malted milk supporting. Hints of strawberry behind a wall of milk chocolate also surface from time to time.

Superior feel, with a nice luscious froth, full body, finishing semi-dry.

Picked up from the brewery about a week ago. Drank out of a spiegelau. Love the can art!

Look: Beer pours thick and dark but not completely opaque. Pitch black in the glass. About 2 fingers of dark khaki head.

Aroma: Big coffee and unsweetened chocolate on the nose. A little bit of dried dark fruit(mostly raisin) in the background as well.

Taste: Aroma translates to the palate, nice coffee and chocolate bitterness but the flavor is not quite as explosive as the aroma would suggest.

Mouthfeel: Awesome full mouthfeel, way fuller than 8.5% would imply. Easily the highlight of this beer.

Overall(style points): Overall this is an extremely well executed stout from NEBCO. Most stouts require barrel aging or adjuncts to achieve this level of flavor, aroma and mouthfeel but IST can stand on it's own. 95 points!

A thick, foamy. cocoa brown head formed with an agressive pour. It was two fingers thick and clung to the glass and left a few bands and spots of lacing as the head retreated into the glass. A whiff of the beer led to scents of milk chocolate, coffee, sweet roasted malt and nuttiness. The taste was sweet and tangy with milk chocolate, coffee and a nuttiness that was reminiscent of almonds. The beer was thick and creamy with a nice mouthfeel and decent carbonation. This is a really fine stout.

Black with a quickly dissipating head. Smells of dark chocolate and roast malts. Burnt malts, oatmeal, boozy edge, cocoa nibs, molasses. Heavy body, light carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel, chocolate and char aftertaste.

On tap at the brewery poured into a snifter. I got this side by side with a Nitro version with Chocolate and Vanilla.

Dark and oily, thin tan cappuccino head settles into thin collar with one floating foamy island.

Aroma is rich roasty malts, some sweet and bitter cocoa.

Smooth flavors, dark roasted malts, some nuttiness, dark fruit and bitter baking chocolate.

Silky, smooth carbonation and nice rich mouthfeel

Maybe not as huge or complex as some other RIS, but doesn't have much negative. Smooth and tasty.

poured from a can. Beer was brewed within a week of drinking. Look is awesome. Deep black with a brown foamy head. Beautiful. Smell is sweet with mostly vanilla. i thought the taste and smell would be a bit stronger. It wasn't. This beer is subtle. The feel is great and on par with the look. Those are this beers strongest assets. Thats not a good thing when reviewing a beer, but this is a quality beer. Just not exceptional

2014 Edition poured into snifter

A - Black, with a creamy looking mocha colored head that dissipates pretty quickly, but leaves a nice film and significant lacing.

S - Strong deeply roasted, almost burnt malts, dark chocolate, some coffee.

T - Dark chocolate, expresso, dark chocolate/cocoa powder. Charred barley and coffee beans gives it a very bitter taste.

F - I wouldn't consider it really full bodied, but does have a fairly creamy texture. Average amount of carbonation.

O - This beer has some really good flavors and feel, but it is a little short of outstanding for me because of the amount of bitterness. I think the coffee profile is way short of Founders Breakfast Stout, so that surprised me. Almost comes across as hoppy like a Victory Storm King. Still very good though.

NEBco has really been upping their game. This was truly a surprise. I stopped by the brewery to by some Coriolis cans and there was a long line because IST was released in cans. I'd never had it. So I ended up waiting in line and buying a few four packs of each beer. Later that night I had both the Coriolis and IST side by side. Upon first taste, the IST seems burnt- Like a throwaway/ drain pour stout. But don't pour it out. Wait. Let it warm a bit. Its a a beer that meant to be had in between warm and and cold. In that stout sweet spot,. I get hints of straw, apricots and cherries. I think its a damn good stout. Like a near perfect beer. I'd love to try a mescal barrel aged version if that exists. I think a bourbon BA wouln't taste right. I tip my metaphorical hat to NEBco. This is a hell of a beer.

Appearance - dark brown almost black body with dark tan head

Smell - dark chocolate, roasted malts, coffee grounds

Taste - flavors aren't quite as intense as the aroma : dark chocolate, roasted malts, fudge some coffee, some molasses

Mouthfeel - roasted flavors from the chocolate and malts dominate out front, back end has notes of coffee and fudge, medium bodied, medium carbonation, the body comes in a tad thin for the style

Overall - good RIS that falls somewhere in the middle of the category in terms of quality. Worth a try

Price point - $3.99/12 oz can

Poured a 2010 bottle into the test glass.
A - Dark and intriguing, an aggressive pour coaxes a thin off white cap. No lacing but oily film clings like sweet wine.
S - Dark toasted malts, hint of raspberry, alcohol in the nose, some fusel and a delightful fruitiness
T - Follows the nose well, add to the palate, some cigar wrap tobacco, and cedar plank, and licorice.
M - Slick on the palate, fully coating leads into some alcohol evaporation, then a surprisingly, dry finish
O - A delightful offering from NEBCO, big and bold. toasty malts, delightful execution and wonderful cocoa notes.

I will start out by saying the beer is expensive. Just about $24.00 for a four pack of 12 oz cans. With that said holy crap, what a great beer. The pour is amazing and the look is awesome. No disappointment in taste either. Rich, strong and keeps you nice and warm. I almost never see this beer at stores so if you get a chance grab it!!!

On tap at the brewery. (Have also had several times from bottles but never got around to reviewing it).

Good look, smooth black brown with a thin tan head that fades to a ring.
Smells of roasted malts, chocolate and dark fruits. A bit of alcohol.
Tastes great, lots of rich, bittersweet dark chocolate and roasted barley. Again some dark fruits like cherry and plum, but there's definitely a fresh, coffee chocolate presence.
Good feel, full and smooth. Noticeable alcohol heat with a nice long finish that leaves you wanting another sip.

Really nice imperial stout! One of my favorite local brews.

"It's a trap!!!" -- Canned on 12/20/17.

Finally got my hands on THE IST!!! Wanna thank the bartenders at NEBCo. for finding a can under the bar and giving me an early Christmas gift. Been waiting at least a decade to try this. Seriously. Since the beginning of my BA days.

Gorgeously dark pour with a massively soapy, frothy, creamy-looking medium-brown head. Not sure how much better a stout can look. Nose is booze, dark chocolate, molasses, dark roast coffee. Same with the flavor. All the delicious aspects of an imperial stout. Smooth, creamy body and feel. Nothing mind-blowing but a wonderful stout that I'm glad to finally enjoy.

Great and appealingly straightforward Russian imperial stout. Nearly black with medium brown foam. Unadulterated flavors of roasted malt, prunes, and dates. A slight hop bitterness balances the rich malty sweetness. Extremely smooth from start to finish. [on tap at brewery]

pours an impenetrably inky blackness with a coffee head that dissipates slowwwwly...
nose is roasted coffee, extra dark chocolate, and nails the RIS profile
really good. follows the nose. gets better as it warms, so pacing.
feel is what you'd expect from a great RIS... but creamier.
it is a great beer. glad I got two, and will tuck that one away for a year.

"When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power, and beyond that, something truly special" Snoke's words echo my view of this one. Been hunting it for what seems like forever, but shoutout to family up in New England for saving one for me. Unlike storm troopers, this one hits the mark, dark and creamy, with swirling notes of dark chocolate, booze and typical malts for RIS. Beautiful pour, and everything just gets better as you work your way down the glass as it warms up.
This one is a throwback to a time when great stouts did not have to be barrel aged, yet it boldly embraces a future way of RI Stouts. It truly embodies Kylo's ideology of "let the past die. Kill it if you have to, it is the only way to become what you are meant to be". To think you will taste just another RIS is misguided. Seriously, "This is not going to go the way you think". Even though it is not a fancy BA stout with crazy flavors, I would recommend this one so you can "fulfill your destiny!"

Looks - A deep deep black pour with thick light brown head

Smells - Rich malts, wicked dark chocolate and some coffee on back end

Taste - Coffee hits me first and then chocolate takes over, finishes a nice sweet malty flavor

Feel - A light to medium thickness

A fabulous brew, definitely enjoyable. If Guinness is the only stout you've tasted then count this as your top 5 to try out.
