Review from BA Mag Issue #118 ( Nov 2016 )

Grass, Herbal, Citrus, Spicy
Bauhaus Brew Labs go right after the style with Wonderstuff, there’s no pussyfooting at all here. It's all clean and lager-like but this Pils is also a bit raw and brash with a mouthful of grass, herbal hops, and some subtle yeast character. After a quick kiss of alcohol, it does go a bit spicy and citrusy in the hop flavor toward the middle to end of the sip, with what I guess is a bit of American flare? The biggest problem I have with this beer and the brewers’ approach is that it should have been in 16 ounce tallboys so I could properly drink it out of a mug or perhaps from just the can itself. I love this beer. I love the malt characteristics....crackery...hops lend an oily, grassy aroma and flavor....not a ton of bitterness to this but it does have a ton of malt and hop flavor. My favorite offering from this brewery and a great new addition to the local lineup.

Smells like a standard Pilsner, but the taste is more robust. Strong malt bill with a body that is a little fuller than most Pils. Expected straw, hay and dried apple flavors, with a flowery and spicy hop finish from the Saaz, as well as some citrus hop undertones. Finishes fairly crisp and dry. Due to the more robust body and malts, this comes across as a cross between a Dortmunder and a Czech Pilsner, with some American hops thrown in as well.

Pours brilliant straw to light gold with a thin foam cap. This is a crisp, dry beer with a big malt presence balanced by big, crisp hops. It has medium light body and above average carbonation.

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright and clear golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of white head which settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A bready and earthy malt forward pils aroma with hints of cracker, citrus, and grass. Pale malt with bready hints of grains, cracker, straw, biscuit, and yeast. Solid hop presence with citrus hints of orange and lemon. Earthy hints of grass along with some floral hints. A pretty solid well balanced aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely bready, earthy, and juicy pils taste with notes of cracker, grass, and citrus. Upfront pale malt with notes of cracker, grains, biscuit, straw, and yeast. Nice citrus hop presence with notes of orange and lemon zest. Floral and earthy hop notes with some grass. A nicely balanced taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Crisp, creamy, and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty solid take on a Pilsener. Solid balance of bready malt notes and hops with a nice little extra bite of citrus.

Poured into a iced pilsner glass from a can, it flows into the glass and deposits about a half inch frothy head, that stays for awhile. Golden amber color, tastes a combination of breads, some hops and light fruit. The taste sticks with you and changes to a non-bitter finish. I told my wife to try it and she said yes its not as hoppy as those other beers you get, its good. There are hints of fruit but not overpowering, nice balance, a lot going on for a pilsner. Not much carbonation, but very smooth feel on the way down and it is a nice change from all the IPA's out there. Smell is easy and fresh. Will definitely be picking up another 6 pack.

Beautiful crystal clear, golden amber lager, with tons of champagne-like action, and topped with a fluffy, 2+ finger snow-white head - almost as though a marshmallow sits atop a pile of gold. Great retention and thick lacing.

Lots of bready malt in the aroma, sickly sweet and wild-flower-like, with an herbal, slightly earthy, slightly citrusy hoppy finish.

Sweet malt profile; dull crackers on the finish; earthy; hop bite for balance without significant hop flavors. Slightly dank/sickeningly sweet aftertaste that detracts slightly.

Extremely lively brew; fairly smooth; finish a balance of oily residue and dry effervescence.

An excellent Czech Pilsner that really does hearken back to Pilsner Urquell. Great profile, exceptional drinkability.

The wonderstuff is quite wonderful...very decent pilsner. The beer poured a clear golden with white head that left some lace. The scent was typical of most pilsners. The taste carried a touch of hops that made this beer unique. The Mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a great beer.

White 2-finger head. Clear golden yellow color.
Just the right amount of hops. Very refreshing beer on a hot day.
Light bodied but nothing out of the ordinary.
