Quite a good take on a dubbel. This beer pours chestnut brown with a thin head that breaks quickly. Smell is dominated by dark fruits, especially the dates mentioned on the bottle. Flavor brings the dark fruits forward and then there is quite a nice malt profile that is balanced out with a slight yeast flavor. Feel is heavy middleweight, with fine carbonation, finish is fruity and malty.
Wow, color me impressed. I was not expecting this from this beer. Nicely done.

Probably one of the best Canadian attempts of this style outside of Quebec, this brew pours lovely, smells nice enough (though not great) and tastes how it should, although a bit metallic.
You can tell it's not a home run, but it's still worth the extra bases. Good job.

500 mL bottle from the LCBO; dated Dec 2 2018 and served barely chilled. Reviewed from notes.
Pours a dark, hazy, brick reddish-bronze colour with crimson red highlights; situated atop is one centimetre of tight, creamy, beige-coloured head that dissipates within the next several minutes. A frothy, creamy collar hangs around indefinitely, surrounding a thin, smooth cap; decent lace, looks good to me. The aroma is comprised of bready, biscuity malts and caramelized sugars/toffee, as well as lots of dark fruit character - raisin and fig, but especially date. In brief, I'd describe it as fruitcake-like, with just a touch of spice (including vanilla).
A reasonably balanced dubbel - it does lean sweet (which is nearly always the case with this style), but I wouldn't say it's too saccharine. The malt profile is varied, including brown sugar and toffee, together with bready, biscuity, cake-like malts and plenty of date fruit flavour. Remains sweet-ish to the finish, with date and hints of raisin coming through amidst hints of spice and a mild booziness. Medium in body; the carbonation starts off spritzy, but doesn't stay that way for long, exhausting itself quickly. The eventual result is a smoother mouthfeel, but to be honest it does come off as a tad watery/thin for a biggish beer; I suppose the flip side of that coin is that it's got pretty good drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.9, a B+. Dubbels are not a style I have a strong affinity for - I mean, I haven't even bothered to review a new one in the better part of three years - but Royal City's interpretation is a respectable one that I rather enjoyed. The date fruit in particular helps to provide another dimension to a beer that would otherwise be just malt-forward, though it could stand to have a bit more complexity (e.g. more yeast character might help). Not on par with the Trappist equivalents, but at $5 a pop, there's no reason not to give this dubbel a shot.

500 ml bottle from the LCBO for $4.95 CDN. Served cool into a pint glass.
Appearance - dark mahogany color, some brown hues, plenty of hazy and capped by a finger of long lasting light tan head.
Smell - dark fruits, toffee, molasses so a small extent and a healthy dose of rich bready bits.
Taste - quite like the nose, restrained bitterness, dark fruits, toffee and a bigger dose of molasses. Really good and well put together.
Mouthfeel - rich, decadent, well carbonated and medium- heavy bodied. A nice dry finish.
Overall - a very nice and well executed dubbel. Worth a try if you get a chance.

I agree with the previous reviewer. This is a solid offering from Royal City. They are opting for a fruity (dates) characteristic than the traditional sweeter (caramel / candi sugar) flavours that typify the style. It has pleasing deep brown hues, fruity smells and taste. There is a peppery spiciness, very little hop characteristics and dry, fruit finish. Would like to see a little more of the malty sweetness. Overall a very enjoyable beer.
