The appearance was a deep amber almost dark brown color with an off white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Light stringy lace. The aroma had a nice caramel/toffee malt base playing nicely with some bitter piney hops, light tobacco and a gentle earthiness. The flavor was sweet initially and then bled into a blend of the earthy and piney hops. Aftertaste was the malts grabbing at the hops in a semi-smooth bitter to sweet sort of fashion. Finish was quick. The palate was medium bodied with a good sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt good. ABV felt good. Overall, pretty nice American Strong ale worthy of having again.

Growler. Pours a slightly hazy, coppery orange color with a mild head. Laces well. Aroma is mostly hoppy. Definitely balanced by some bread and caramel. Plenty of both in the nose. The flavor portrays the malt in a more complex fashion. It tastes of dry bready malt, caramel and even a bit of nut. The finish is very bitter. Strong, lingering, hoppy bitterness that lasts and seemingly masks the alcohol. Medium bodied. Surprised by its potent ABV. Alcohol hidden very well. I enjoyed this and only tasted in a rather small, shared sample. Would have no qualms with revisiting this brew.

On-tap 10/20/2014 at Doherty's Ale House in Warwick, RI, served in a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a deep reddish brown color, with a medium dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a very thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is an excellent blend of floral hops, fruity citrus and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel and citrus. Then a strong hops bitterness comes in. The malt character is hearty and brings a very good balance. The 9.50% ABV is well-hidden. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Very crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Very tasty, goes down dangerously easy, not too filling, strong and well-disguised kick, good representation of style, this is an excellent hoppy imperial red ale to drink for a long time.
