Most Market Towns in Yorkshire have a central market place, usually with a stone cross in the centre of it. Knaresborough is no exception and this is where you will find Blind Jack’s Ale House.
Knaresborough has a great wealth of Pubs for its size, some 22+, but this is the best Pub by far. The beer selection here is only bettered by the specialist off-license ‘BeerRitz’, which is next door and well worth a look.
Outside is painted gloss black with just a hanging sign indicating the establishment’s purpose. Inside you will find a very traditional bar that is over 200 years old, err… well not quite! It is just over 10 years old, for this used to be a couple of small ordinary Shops. A change of use application and these were soon knocked together and completely refurbished into a Pub in 1991. Though, the casual visitor would *never* know this. The sympathetic and traditional décor earned it CAMRA’s (National) Best New Pub in 1992.
As you enter this rather low ceiling, small Pub, it is all wood and bare brick walls. The smallish Bar is right in front of you at the back of the building with a standing area in front. You may have to fight your way through the small cramped crowd to get to the bar at busy times. To the right is another room (Snug) and a flight of thin narrow bare wooden stairs. These lead to the upstairs drinking area that is comprised of three other drinking rooms, one of which is thankfully no-smoking.
The beer range is simply astonishing given its size. 4 Regular Handpump Cask beers, the offerings are; Black Sheep Best Bitter, Daleside (often varies), Timothy Taylor Landlord and Village White Boar. In addition, up to 4 Guest Cask beers are also on Sale, usually all from Independent Breweries. Sometimes stocks a Real Cider (but not always). Has a range of foreign beers on draft including Budvar. The range is completed by a small but very good range of Belgium beers, all served in their correct glasses. Due to its size - No Food.
Small, often cramped when busy, but this really does add to the convivial atmosphere and friendliness. I can only describe it as a “Beer Festival in a Closet”.
Highly Recommended when in (North) Yorkshire.
