11.2 oz. bottle poured into tulip
(10/22/14 package date ... 18 months old)

L: brown ... murky brown orange with 1/4-inch head of beige foam, some sticking

S: super sweet ... after 18 months in the bottle, the malt has obviously taken over; peach/fruity sweet, bread malt, molasses, lots of syrup on french toast; floral hops

T: mix of sweet peach, fruit, light malt with a lingering hop bitterness, earthy dirt hops, floral hops, though the malt has almost fully taken over

F: ale soft, close to midweight

O: at 18 months old, it's not awful, but it has a look, taste and feel of a pretty old brew; still, the aroma is still very nice, and overall it still maintains an authentic English brown ale profile; a fresh one of these with a big hop bite would seem to be tasty; if I get a chance to try a fresh one, I will

This has such an interesting story that I hate to give it a below average rating.
An American opens a brewery in a country that made its economic recovery (after World War 2) by copying and then improving on America's obsession, the automobile. The American marries a Japanese woman who becomes his business partner. Their brewery looks like theAmerican model brewery with many, perhaps 100 brews, many of whom seem like American renditions.
Will their current beers win the hearts of as many Americans as their cars did?
Of course not.
Can this country of seeming over-achievers eventually produce incredible beers?
Eventually.
What about this one?
Good beer, but the hops linger too long for it to be classified as an English Brown. I view it as an American Brown.

This beer was listed in the "!001". Should it be? Less on its quality and more on its being a prelude.

330ml bottle poured into tulip.

Pours a hazy brick brown with one skinny finger of light tan head that leaves Arabian skyline lace as it recedes.

Smells of grapefruit and lemon zest, brown sugar, semi-sweet chocolate and mild green hops.

Tastes of more brown sugar malt, chocolate covered mixed nuts, faint cold coffee and mild citrus/pine hops.

Feels soft and creamy. Solidly medium bodied with smooth carbonation. Finishes off-dry.

Verdict: Highly recommended. A slightly hoppier than usual brown ale.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/8/2015. Listed as 7% on the bottle. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/piney hops and dark/bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate/nuttiness, light citrus, pine, and herbal/floral earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/piney bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light citrus/pine, and herbal/floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/bready malt and citrus/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly creamy/bready, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Some light dryness from bitterness as well. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good American brown ale style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/bready malt and citrus/earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

360 ml brown bottle. No date, but the amount and coarse nature of the sediment makes me think this may not be very fresh.

Appearance: Hazy mahogany with a khaki head that displays good retention and leaves some lacing.

Smell: Loads of medium roasted and chocolate malts, some chocolate, and a slight hop note.

Flavor: lightly sweet and very malty with some faint yeast notes adding complexity. Hints of raisins and caramel.

Mouthfeel: Light side of medium body; some dryness in the finish.

This brown ale just didn't do it for me. The reviews seem to be mixed, yet leaning toward the positive. I bought this on a whim, but would not buy it again. The flavor was, I don't know, too generic.

A: Amber brown with a light haze, no visible carbonation and topped with 2 fingers of beige head.

S: Citrusy hops on top of caramel toffee notes. Coffee, dark chocolate. Reminds me more of an American Brown than the English style due to the hops.

T: Toffee and caramel, dark chocolate and coffee followed fast by the orange citrus zesty hop notes. Light burnt bitterness.

M: Medium balanced syrup and resinous body, little fine bubbled carbonation.

O: Found it in Chiang Mai, drank Nov 21st, the day of my son’s circumcision. Great well crafted brew with a cool label. Great one for Japan.

a: its a murky light brown and ruby red. large 3 finger tan head thats leaving a nice lacing

s: sweet caramel and toffee, a very faint hint of earthy pine, a bit creamy, some sweet berries. something else in here that i can't quite put my finger on

t: bready, sweet caramel, pecans, sweet generic berries, a hint of alcohol tinge to cut the sweetness, lemongrass??, and some of that earthy pine that i picked up in the aroma

m: its a medium mouthfeel, a little on the lighter side, maybe a bit watery. small carbonation

o: its average, and thats not an insult. theres something slightly odd in here that i can't quite put my finger on. its a beer that centers around its sweetness, and theres not not much else. i wouldn't go out of your way for it
