On cask at Popeye's in Tokyo.

Amber colour with a sparse off white head, which left some lacing regardless. Big west coast aroma goes long on the hops, but has the malt to balance it. Citrus notes of grapefruit and lemon lead off, with pine complimenting them and caramel reeling things back in and providing a touch of sweetness. The flavour follows through faithfully, but with a bit more malt forward sweetness than I expected. Again citrus and resin assert themselves early and bring a great level of bitterness, which is ably balanced by caramel and toffee, which lingers in the finish. Where this beer really excels is in the mouthfeel, which is everything you can hope for from a cask. Its smooth and full, with a wonderfully deep texture that shows Baird know how to make a great cask.

This is a very solid IPA, and I was lucky to enjoy it on cask and relatively close to the source.

Appearance: Two centimeter width of off white head on a dark opaque orange body.

Aroma: Citrus and marmalade

Taste: Several minutes of long lasting fine bitterness. Orange rinds, and dark long lasting caramel. There is something very juicy about the hoppiness of this beer.

Mouthfeel: Mild refined bubbles and creamy mouthfeel

Drinkability: This is quite a yummy brew. This IPA is supposed to be between the US and English styles, but it is way, way too hoppy to be an English IPA.

This beer is about four bucks a bottle, which means that even though this is a great beer, there is no reason to buy it regularly when, Rogue's Bruttal Bitter, Rogue's American Amber and Anchor Liberty Ale are available for a full buck less a bottle (in Japan).

Pours a burnt orange colour with massive tan head, fluffy and marshmallowy on top. Lace clings to the glass beautifully. Retains well. Does everything well.

Smells lovely: nice citric tang with tangerine, grapefruit and kaffir lime leaf. Mint and a hint of leather in there as well. Broody, spicy twist on an otherwise highly appealing fruity aroma. Yum.

Taste dips into great IPA territory, with nice salted caramel base overlain with spicy tangy fruit notes. Grapefruit, lime, pink lady apple with nutmeg, cedar wood and a nice resiny hop finish with distinct citric oils. Tasty, well constructed IPA. Hops star, but don't hog the spotlight from the other talented players.

Smooth enough, with a bit of body behind it. Bit too much pull on the back, but otherwise pretty great.

Wonderful beer and the best I've had from Baird. Tasty, complex and exciting with a big, impressive hop presence.

A pretty, clear copper body with a little bit of carbonation. The head is really notable; Big fat, thick fluffy and off-white, huge wallpaper. After a while, a big swirl of the bottom 5th, this beer takes on a significantly different appearance. Thick amber with a dense head. Baird Beer's Teikoku IPA made for 3 pours of gorgeous beer!

Massively malty and almost equally hoppy big nose on this one. Strawberry caramel. A little toasty and really juicy, the nose is totally appetizing. At 6% it's not strong, but it's very tasty! An IPA unlike anything else I've tasted that was produced in Japan. Unique enough for me to immediately want to get it again. Good stuff. Definitely recommended at least for comparison between the very few IPAs available here in the J-heezy.

Bought a bottle of this from a random liquor shop in Nerima, Japan. Poured into a Baird pint glass. Amazingly complex and mystical appearance, moving as a gradient from dark at the top to light brown at the bottom of the glass. Lots of layers to the scent coming off this -- very hoppy with bits of caramel, nuts, and possibly blood orange. Wonderful taste without any notes of sourness or bitterness in the throat, and no excess gas. Overall, this is one of my favorite Bairds i've tried, especially bottled. Get this if you can find it!
