Kurofune is the word Japanese used to describe the American gunboats that came to open Japan to Western trade. Kurofune Porter is sleek and forceful, but leaves a winning bittersweet taste of chocolate and coffee on the tongue.

Dark color, pale tan head, very fine foam.

Smells nice, nothing off, a little bit mild. Malty.

Taste is pretty decent, cocoa, unsweetened chocolate. Malt more than hops. Hints of licorice.

Moderately rich mouthfeel, very nice fine carbonation.

Finish is subtle, bitter. OK but not awesome.

Poured dark brown into a snifter, nice light brown head and decent lacing. Smell of chocolate and whiskey. This carries over to the taste, chocolate, coffee, and a bit boozy. A little different than most porters.

Pours a darker, hazy brown with a thin, light tan head. Shows some decent carbonation. Smells of sweet malt and chocolate.
A thinner mouth feel that brings in the coffee/chocolate up front then finishes with a slight hop bite. Finish is crisp. A grassy tone throughout.
Will let warm.

330 ml bottle into pint glass, bottled on 12/15/2014. Pours hazy dark brown color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, herbal, floral, light raisin/plum, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, herbal, floral, light raisin/plum, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice English porter style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

On tap at the Harajuku Taproom in Tokyo, Japan.

Pours a very dark, opaque black/brown body. Smells of smoke, chocolate, espresso, roast. Flavour is predominantly char, with supporting chocolate and coffee. The char is a bit too much for me here, and I love my coffee as black as possible. Mouthfeel is medium-thinner bodied, fairly full but a bit much in terms of the char and smokiness.

A: Pours a clear but opaque just about jet black in color with light to moderate amounts of gentle visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and faint dark reddish brown highlights. The beer has a finger tall dense foamy light beige head that reduces to a couple of small patches of thick film surrounded by a thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of roasted malts with light to moderate aromas of dark chocolate and coffee. Hints of charred malts and earthy hops.

T: Upfront there is a moderate to strong flavor of dark roasted malts with a light to moderate flavor of charred malts. That is followed by moderate flavors of dark chocolate and coffee. Finally there are light to moderate flavors of earthy hops in the finish which imparts a touch of bitterness to the moderate roasty bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Relatively smooth.

O: A little lighter in body than I expected for a Baltic Porter but still very enjoyable with a nice amount of complexity to the flavors and aromas. Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol.
