I had the Baird Red Rose amber and was very impressed so I grabbed this today.Poured a deep cola color with a thick creamy one finger off white head that never settles it stays thru the duration of the pint.Very fruity nose with a bit of char, the fruit is not that of dark fruit, almost tropical in nature wich was very different.Very smooth creamy mouthfeel it just glides down with ease and is not overly full.Flavors are of caramel/butter up front with some hefty fruit, the finish is lightly charred with a little bit of wood. This porter has some complexity, doesnt have alot of traits of a Baltic porter so Iam not sure thats what I would put it in,either way very nice.

Single bottle on the recommendation of my buddy Dave. Pours into my glass an extremely dark brown bordering on black with a creamy solid inch of light tan head and spotty lacing as it slowly falls. Aromas of mildly roasted dark malt with a swirl of caramel and chocolate. Light coffee along with a fruity aspect as well. Kinda toasty grain hints. Nice.

First sip brings a mellow roasted dark malt upfront with a touch of graininess to it. It moves into a mix of chocolate and light coffee flavors. Fruity hints flow in and out. It flows down with a hint of hops and a kiss of bitterness. This is a smooth, tasty porter!

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a sturdy carbonation. It hits a nice stride with how I like a porter to be...not too light and not too heavy. Overall, a great smooth porter from Japan. Very glad to see this brew make it over here and I hope more Japanese beers make it this way, as there are brewers doing great things there!

360ml bottle imported March 2012.
Poured with a creamy tan head that had very good retention and lacing. Very dark brown but clear body.

Aroma: lightly sweet, with hints of chocolate, raisins and coffee.

Flavor: rich and complex with great balance and a lasting dark-roasted grain aftertaste. Somewhat similar to a Scottish stout including a hint of smoke.

Feel: Medium body is near creamy smooth even with lively medium carbonation.

O: an excellent porter.

S: 12 oz poured into Guinness

A: Black with a thick white head that has great retention. When held to the light there is a nice red hue.

S: Not very strong, but, there is a slight malt and smoke.

T: Nice smoke with a bit of coffee and malt.

M: Not to heavy with a slight creaminess

D: Not to heavy with a nice taste, reminds me of some black lagers.

Overall: Pleasant porter, nice taste, though not to strong, just like a porter should be. A nice surprise from a country that tends to focus on hops or crisp lagers.

360ml bottle, with some nice abstract seafaring imagery depicted on the label.

This beer pours a somewhat hazy, dark cola-tinted brown hue, with three fat fingers of puffy, tightly foamy, and bubbly tan head, which settles quite slowly, eventually leaving some random miniature streaks of tacky lace around the glass.

It smells of milk chocolate, oily nuts, sour milk, a bit of wet smoke, and tame biscuity caramel malt. The taste is more bittersweet chocolate, thin, acrid coffee, toasted grains, a mild lactic astringency, gritty mixed nuts, and zippy floral, weedy hops.

The carbonation is a tad below average in its trilling frothiness, the body a solid, yet at times teetering medium weight, with just a wee bit too much swirling edginess to call dibs on smooth. It finishes off-dry, and still beholden to the chocolate malt, but a strong case is made by some resurgent bitter leafy hops.

For being on the opposite side of Russia from the Baltic (sea and culture), Baird does a more than adequate job recreating the real deal. A pleasant surprise, and agreeable enough for a day where spring seems to have taken yet another detour on its already delayed arrival.

Served cool from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Kurofune has a deep dark brown color that only shows when held to the light. The thick off-white head has great retention and leave some lace behind.

Aroma is sweet and roasty with a hint of hops. Nice chocolate/caramel thing going on here too.

Flavor is rich and intense - definately a baltic style porter. Big roasty malts, dark chocolate, strong bitter coffee, and a bit of smoke.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with higher than average carbonation. This is really the only real weakness I see in this beer.

Overall probably one of the best beers I've ever had from Japan. I wouldn't mind another some time soon.

Poured from the 330ml bottle into a Maudite snifter. Body is a rich brown with ruby highlights, topped by a small, creamy, khaki-colored head. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, a touch of roastiness, and notes of chocolate, mocha, and dark fruit.
Palate is mostly roasted malt up front, along with a decent amount of dark fruity sweetness. A big hit of dark chocolate comes through before the swallow, receding into a long-lasting husky bitterness on the finish.
Body is full and creamy, with just a touch of oiliness. An interesting interpretation of a porter, and although I wouldn't say it fits the traditional definition of a baltic porter, it's good nonetheless.

Didn't have high expectations, as I haven't had many craft brews from Japan.. but right after pouring into my snifter, it slapped its huge nose all over my face and grabbed my attention. Pungent, sweet, but not extremely full/complex nose. 2 fingers of thick, frothy head. Definitely tasted a bit of coffee and raisins/dark fruit, little bit of chocolate.. alcohol was present, but not bad. Good for sipping.

Wouldn't say this was necessarily a top ten favorite, but definitely wasn't bad. I had a delightful time being surprised with the complex olfactory/flavor journey on which it took me! Wouldn't mind drinking again, but probably won't go hunting for it.

12 oz. Nearly opaque black pour, slightish white head, lasted half way through the beer. Solid roasted malt and coffee nose. Similar in taste, with some mocha and a light hop character. A bit light bodied, with a clean but slightly watery finish. Good drinkability, but much more standard porter likeness than Baltic. Still one worth trying from this brewer though.

A light chestnut into darker mahoghany, with billowing tan foam. Very fine, intricate lace that looks like a dusty cobweb. The head has staying power.

Nutty brown sugar aroma. Some mild roast malt.

Chocolate and roasty malt notes, some tobacco and mild bitterness. Even carbonation, feels very good. Fairly light, but above average in body. Overall this was very enjoyable with no flaws at all. Thanks to autumnaldave for recommending it.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with a frothy 2 inch tan head (the pour was a bit vigorous). Head retention and lacing are both excellent. Aroma is coffee, bittersweet chocolate and roasted malt. The taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some caramel malt and smoke noticable too. Very nice. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a little bit oily and smooth. Drinkability is good, the smoothness makes this easy to drink. I just bought this today, and I'm glad I drank it today too. I think it's a pretty good brew, I definitely recommend this. This is the first Baird beer I've tried, hopefully their other ones are this good too.

A: Very dark, but you can still see light through the glass. Deep red. A lot of head on top.. mostly from a bad pour, but it still looks very nice.

S: Slight hops, chocolate and nuts, and almost a wood tone to it.. Malty.

T: Malty with a good kick of hops.. it fades to a more muted coffee and chocolate taste. Smooth and tasty..

M: Leaves a little film feeling at the end, but nothing major..

D: Overall a very good beer, and the label kicks ass! A good beer for when you don't want to be flattened by an RIS.. Nice deep, mellow and delicious.
