Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a rich golden color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of citrus, hints of tropical fruits. Taste is dank, citrus, light malts, moderate bitterness. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a highly refreshing and solid beer.

2/28/18

Pale orange with a slight haze, lasting foam and concentric rings of lace.
Hoppy aroma, orange and pale malt, a little sweet.
Taste is moderately bitter, orange citrus and bitter peel, sweet pale malt.
Lighter side of medium bodied and finishes fairly dry.
Well built and structurally sound, just some oxidation creeping in at 9+ months.
Picked up a single and didn’t check the date, doh.

On tap at the Nook pub today.

The beer pours a light golden amber color with decent head retention and lacing. On the nose I pick up some light orange citrus and that's about it. The flavor profile replicates the nose in what is a fairly sweet ipa. The beer had decent bitterness, which helps to counter the sweetness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile.

Shrug. Pretty much a cookie cutter recipe ipa. This is a decent, but also a pretty unexciting ipa. Ordered this instead of furious, and quickly wished I would have ordered the furiuos. Pretty sure I won't be revisiting this any time soon.

Type: 16-oz. can
Glass: Clear 16-oz. Bruges beer glass
From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $3.99
Purchased: Aug. 24, 2018
Consumed: Aug. 24, 2018
Reviewed as: American IPA
Misc.: Canned on July 16, 2018

Picked this up on a quick trip to Bine & Vine. Read Geoi’s Friday email that he scored some Fair State. Had only reviewed Pahlay'Ahlay as a gift from Sam, but loved it, giving it a 4.40. Also liked Paradisiac, giving that a 4.25 on Untappd. Was psyched to see them in San Diego (still don’t know how it happened). Anyway, picked up their IPA, which online was described as, “Dry, pale, and aroma-forward American IPA brewed with wheat malt and Horizon, Chinook, Crystal, Cascade, Simcoe, and Centennial hops.” I generally don’t like a lot of hops in my beer, but I can change. For sure wouldn’t be able to pick out Horizon or Crystal out of those hops.

Poured a golden semi-hazy color with 3-to-4 fingers of rocky white head. Lots of rather slow moving bubbles creeping up along the sides of the glass. Almost perfect foamy lacing. Perfect retention. (Sight - 4.75)

Not sure I could smell six hops, but there sure were a lot on the nose. Recognized Centennial, Cascade and Simcoe. Also pine forest, wintergreen mint, lemon, dank resin, pineapple, grapefruit, candied orange peel, citrus zest and herbal. More citrus notes and Simcoe coming through from the can. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste follows the nose for the most part. Simcoe, Centennial, woody Chinook, dank pine, resin, wintergreen mint, lemon, grapefruit rind, pineapple, bitter orange peel, herbal, citrus zest, pepper, papaya and mango. (Taste - 4.25)

Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Long, bitter finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Just an excellent IPA. Happy I was able to try it. (Overall - 4.25)

It’s slightly better than average, but lacks character. A good gateway IPA for those that are afraid something that is not macro. Sweet, light, carbonated, malty, slight citrus with mild pine. Finishes dry with a quick finish.

Poured into a becher pint glass.
The appearance was a nice looking bronzed yellow/copper color with a small white foamy head sliding off fairly quick. Not much lace but what was there slid with the sips.
The aroma had a nice meshing of floral hop character and low lying piney-ness. Subtle wheat cracker malt with some caramel/toffee tones.
The flavor yielded to the sweetness of the entire blend. Long aftertaste of floral hops and caramel malts.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionable feel to it. Carbonation felt like an AIPA and had a steady ABV. Slight finish of gripping pine and floral dryness.
Overall, one of those Midwest IPA's, like a Two Hearted but not as good as a Two Hearted. Still, it's good enough to come back to.

Decanted from a 16 oz (355 ml) can into a conical pint glass; produced on 2/28/2018.
A: Pours a hazy golden yellow with a one inch, white head and rings and rings of foamy white lacing.
S: Floral with aromas of honeysuckle and lemon chiffon. Very fresh bouquet.
T: Tastes of lemon and honey with only a subtle pine note. Very lightly bitter with a clean finish.
M: Light to medium bodied with medium to high effervescence.
O: A really light, refreshing version of the AIPA style. Really enjoyed it.

Pours straw yellow with a short, white head and minimal lacing.

The smell is muted citrus and a little pineapple and floral.

The taste is like honey and floral with a pine resin on the finish.

The mouthfeel has medium/high carbonation.

A decent beer with a unique blend of flavors.

Poured 16oz can into snifter. A clear lighter orange color with a 2 finger white head. Thin ring with good amount of lacing coating the glass. Light hops of grass and citrus. Notes of grapefruit, orange, and hints of melon. Not much for the malts. Lacks much of a malt presence, some caramel sweetness. Flavors of weak citrus include grapefruit, orange, and a bit of melon. Rather grassy and floral, bitterness on the finish. Light bodied, crisp and refreshing. A little dryness. Flavors are light, but tasty.

16oz can, served in a willi becher glass. Slightly cloudy but mostly clear golden yellow body, one finger thick white head, good retention, not much lacing. Smell is citrus, a bit of pineapple, light and resinous pine, a bit of caramel and even a touch of hay. Flavour is a clean caramel, grapefruit, pineapple, touch of pine and resin, caramel and touch more resin, mild-moderate resinous bitterness on the finish. Very standard, clean IPA flavours right here. Mouthfeel is medium-lighter bodied, good carbonation, appropriate bitterness on the backend.

L-Light oak colored...fizzy head..

S-Fresh...floral...some citrus with light grapefruit, tangerine and oranges..not real fragrant but the notes are there if you strain..

T-Floral up front..grapefruit rind, orange peel..malt is light and not noticeable.

F-Medium bodied...slighty under carbonated...dry on the finish.

O-Cans dates 11/29/2017 so not the freshest offering. I liked this better previously. This one is not bad but nothing I would tout.

This beer pours a clear gold with a large head. The aroma has tropical and floral notes, with pineapple, papaya, banana, mango, violets, and white tea. The flavor features pink grapefruit, tangerine peel, mango, pineapple, papaya, clementine, kiwi and banana. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Overall this is an awesome IPA, tons of flavor, perfect balance, great bitterness, just a real delight to drink.

Poured from 16 oz can. Pale amber with a finger of fizzy head. A lot of suspended yeast particulate in the beer. Does not look the greatest. Aroma is West Coast IPA with citrus, pine, and some tropical fruit. Little influence in the aroma from the malt. Good hop flavor of grapefruit, citrus, resin, and tropical fruit. A bit of old school and a bit of new school hop combination. Malt is dry and offers little balance. Medium body but something is off with the carbonation which has been an issue with many Fair State cans. A good IPA that suffers from a few flaws. I do not know why they would put an unfiltered West Coast IPA in cans and they need to get some carbonation issues sorted out as well.

Very "traditional" American IPA aroma of grapefruit, orange and pine. The taste is similar, with a nice toasted malt backing, and ample bitterness at the finish. Very dry and somewhat creamy mouthfeel. This isn't like most new IPAs with the crazy tropical notes, this is like a 90s throwback, and a damn good one.

Damn tasty IPA that can stand up to big guys like 60 Minute and Sierra Nevada Torpedo. Big floral pine, almost perfume-like, and then a punch of citrus. It finishes dry and bitter. I'd have another.

I'll start this with a request: please, PLEASE put a bottling date on your beers, Fair State. With that said, I think my beer was pretty fresh, or it has some serious lasting power.

Look: The beer pours a nice light tangerine, golden color. The beer isn't especially opaque but it isn't translucent either. Plenty of carbonation with a nice white head

Smell: I get a nice whiff of orange, grapefruit, and maybe a tiny amount of passion fruit. Resinous qualities of you swirl a bit.

Taste: Theres some bitterness to start, and then the middle comes through with the orange and some malt sweetness, and a pretty bitter finish. I get grapefruit in the finish a bit and some dankness
Feel: a nice medium mouthfeel and a dry lingering bitterness on the finish

Overall: this is one of my favorite IPA's of the Twin Cities metro. A bomber generally is about five dollars which is a steal. Great beer, seek this out!

Look: Clear light gold-straw with a couple fingers of white head and some lacing and good retention. Smell: fruity (citrus), dank
Taste: initially candy sweet and fruity with some dank weedy quality, finishing out with a fairly substantial bitterness.
Feel: light, spritely

Overall: This one was alright. I liked the mouthfeel - nice and light with a tingly carbonation - kind of reminded me of Lagunitas Lil Sumpin Sumpin. The flavor is kind of torn between these extremes of candy sweet and hard bitterness in the finish, which kind of wore on me after a while. Decent but I don't think I would pick another one up.

Great look, smell, look, mouth feel and finish. Got a bomber at Elevated and it was better than Surly, Ode, Let It Ride, and Bent Paddle, which were all awesome, but second place to this beer.

Pours a hazy dark gold / light orange color with a less than one finger white head. The aroma has grapefruit, grapefruit zest, and some pine. Kind of a subdued aroma.

Tastes much like it smells with grapefruit, citrus zest, and a little pine. Just like with the aroma, the taste is also subdued. There is no bottled on date, so I can't tell how old the beer is. I will grade it as if this was a fresh out of the bottle beer. If this is fresh out of the bottle beer, it lacks something.

Medium bodied with average carbonation. This is pretty much an average beer across the board.

No bottling date. Unfortunate since it's an IPA.

Appearance: Opaque rusty orange in color with a big off-white head of froth.

Aroma: Dank and spicy hops dominate.

Taste: This beer has so much going for it. Hop bitterness and flavor are right on the mark, huge pine and bitter punch with an overriding dankness. The malt comes through only in that 2-row-esque signature flavor. Obviously a hop forward beer but never overly bitter. Almost soft finish with an aftertaste of lingering pine bitterness. Just an awesome example of a true west coast IPA.

Mouthfeel: Medium in body with smooth carbonation and a soft feel despite the bitterness. High drinkability for the style.

Final Thoughts: I've had this on-tap at the brewery and now in a bomber. Although, the on-tap version was superior, the flavor mostly held up in the bomber form. I could see this IPA becoming highly sought after in the BA community. Would I drink it again? Yep.

(Re-review 9/21/17, original score 4.38)

Look: light golden color, small head that dissipates quickly into virtual nothingness. Nose: fruit forward, mango, tangerine, passion fruit, kiwi, whiffs of chalk (which I like). Taste: fruity too with the same suspects, it's quite juicy too, no perceived bitterness whatsoever. Feel: juicy, chewy, almost sticky (something I've never had to say about an IPA before), carbonation is too low. Comments: I remember when IPA's used to have bitterness. I remember it fondly. Sigh...

Loved the beers from Fair State we’ve sampled in their tap room, so happy to see a (reasonably priced!) bomber show up on shelves. 22 ounces split with my wife.

The pour is unfiltered orange/yeller. Hard to get anything up the nose, determined sniffling leaves me with nothing but an urge to blow my nose. Mild sweet malts, light fruitiness. Not much going on.

Fair State IPA is a continuation of a distressing local trend – the difficulty good tap rooms have translating those beers into a quality bottled product. The wonderful citrus notes so evident on tap have gone MIA, this trends towards the earthy, damp maple leaf side of the hop. Chorus of moderate bitterness provides a bit of pleasure, which is quickly overrun by the malts. Fine in the mouth, but my wife has already declared she’ll be leaving her nine ounces & moving on to a cuter brew.

The difference between this & the tap version is night & day. This is flat, relatively tasteless, with zero sex appeal, while on tap it was zesty, tasty, lovely. I might re-review if I have it on tap again, but I will avoid these bottles. Not a good beer.
