What a beer! Goes down easy with its nice robust flavor from the roasted malts, it really goes down smooth! Light, but rich in flavor, and it is very easy to drink with a bratwurst or some knackwurst. Grab one of these on draft, and don't be afraid of the dark!

from the tap at Old World's Plum Festival (huntington beach, ca.), i had a sudden liberation from all the belgiums i have been hooked on for the last several (expensive) months.
minor trace of head, completely disappears, then leaves a nice colored brown beer. kind of caramel-ly smell, with the basic, commercial brown flavored taste. but it was very welcome and very tasty. miss these german beers; they've always been my favorite. miss Old World too; always has been a kind of second home for me. but the wife and kids were in tow so i couldnt satisfy all my desires. great place to have a beer, great atmosphere. very nice beer, even if it is one of germany's "commercial" brews. budweiser vs warsteiner= take the german commercial brew any (and every) day . . . .

Had from a bottle poured into a plastic red cup at a German Christmas Festival in Downtown Akron last night. No option to drink from a glass or to carry the bottle with it being a festival. My review will be a bit limited due to that but I believe that I can provide insight none the less.

A Nice creamy light brown head over a dark brown body which is translucent. Again, difficult to see much of the body due to the opaque plastic cup that I was drinking it out of.

S Great sweet malty, classic German smell. Not too much hops at all. Maybe even nutty.

T The nice malty sweetness continues into the taste with a muted caramel note and even a nice grainy wheat type taste as well. There is again a great nutty taste in there too. This is a classic German beer, that I can certainly tell.

M The best part. Nice and smooth, full mouthfeel.

D Very good. I could have many of these in a session and not hesitate.

Notes: Really glad that I had this from a bottle at the German Christmas Festival. It would be better to have it from a glass, however, to fully appreciate it.

Deep copper color, clear. Lots of bubbles rising up. Small head.

Faint aroma. Malty, biscuit, roasted.

Rich barley malts, biscuit, roasted, caramel. Spicy noble hops towards the end, very mild. Finish is crisp, sweet. Full bodied, crisp, very smooth, nice carbonation.

It's an outstanding beer.

Ahh.. one of my favorite widely distributed beers. This has a dark coffee like color. Mildy transparent. Not sure how to explain it, but when I taste it, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. From opening to tipping the bottle up, it is great tasting all the way through, Very nice beer. Highly recommened. I have introduced this beer to many of friends, and have yet had anybody tell me that it isn't good. Even the "just give me a beer" friends. They all seem to like it.

This is a favorite for backyard parties. Warsteiner is probably one of the best German macro imports; and the Dunkel is even better. You don't have to be a dark beer lover to enjoy it. Pours a gorgeous dark amber, with a foamy tan head. The smell is mild hops and, unlike the original Warsteiner, the hops are equally mild in the taste. Nice mouthful, light carbonation, and just enough roasted malt flavor to satisfy. Just enough bitterness in the aftertaste to keep you wanting more. Excellent for an "easy to get" German dark.

Poured into 12 oz pint glass.

Appearance - Very dark beer but you can slightly see through the glass (not murky like wheat beer though). Head was fizzy like a cola.

Smell - mild and nice aromas.

Taste - Very mild in overall flavors with slight hop bitter finish to balance. Nice German Dunkel style but not overpowering.

Mouthfeel - decent

Drinkability - This is where this beer shines through. An easy drinker, very pleasant flavorings and sessionable.

Overall - Putting this beer on my "return to" list. Bought only a single sampler, but will probably buy several the next time I'm in the mood for a German style Dunkel.

12-oz bottle

This looks like a real heavy-hitter sort of beer... quite dark, although the more keen observers will note that the density of the color is not as high as a stout. The off-white head had little staying power. The smell (very mild malty) doesn't do much for me but is by no means offensive. The taste is nice and rich without any of the strong bitterness that the color might hint at. There is a nice balance of sweetness with a malt and almost chocolate mix going on. A light mouthfeel without a lot of body, but this seems like a fair trade-off for the outstanding drinkability. A very clean finish that doesn't strangle your tastebuds.

This is a personal favorite and long-time tailgating companion. Wonderful with brats. Highly recommended as a beer to start the unwashed masses on the path from mega-swills to quality beer.

Poured 12oz bottle into glass. Product of Germany. 4.8% ABV

Appearance- Pours a dark charcoal color. Two finger head that has a brown tint. Decent lacing. Opaque.

Smell- A blend of cereal grain malt with cocoa, some roasted coffee aromas too.

Taste- Fresh earthy grain, with a lighter chocolate flavor hiding behind all that barley. Finishes with a smokiness. Some herbal hop fisnish but very minimal.

Mouthfeel- Thin in body. Very smooth with lively carbonation.

Overall- I was impressed with this beer. Complex, and drinkable. Thin, yet flavorful. The chocolate notes blended nicely with the malt. Prome example of a not so common style. Excellent.

A - Pours dark brown with a minimal amount of carbonation.

S - toasted malts, caramel and a little bit of coffee.

T - The caramel really comes out here. Not too complicated and nicely balanced.

M - Lightly carbonated and thinner than an American dark lager, but has a smooth feel.

O - Fantastic offering for a Dunkel. I could drink these all day. Sure, it's not the most complex beer, but a nice balance for a session beer.

this is a lovely dunkel. pours a deep brown color with a pale head which quickly falls. nose is of toasty breadcrust, munich malt and elegant noble hops... more than i expected.

it's quite dry and crisp. an incredibly refreshing beer with a huge nose. there's a chocolately character to it that never goes bitter or astringent and the hops hold it all together nicely. quite rich for such a clean finisher.

overall, great drinkability. would be awesome summer drink for lager stand in when you want something more.

This is a great beer. It has a nice fruity nose, dark yet clear appearance and very nice crisp mouth feel. The head is very minimal but definitely right on for its beer style. I can taste a bit of a chocolate note. Definitely one of my favorite Pilsners.

My first German beer (yes, I'm a newbie, don't kill me!) was a great experience. A moderate pour left about a 1 inch head in a pilsner. I would call the color "garnet" with dark copper hues.

S - Malty sweet with slight hoppiness. Very pleasant smell, may give a hint of some sort of fruit (hard to describe)

T - caramel, hops, malts, simple yet satisfying. A hint of metallic-ness which I thought contributed to the flavor

M - smooth, crisp, very little carbonation

D - definitely a drinkable beer. If you're not in the mood for a stout or a porter, but still want something approaching that ballpark, this is a great beer for those evenings.

Good taste, good feel, good price ($1.80 for a 12 oz bottle)

Overall: not for everybody (my gf didn't like it) but I'll surely buy more

Love this beer just found it today in my town which is rare also saw st. pauli girl dark which is also hard to find around here.

Love this alot though im drinkin an ice cold one right now.

Sweet malt taste going down with a good hop bitterness at the end.

Smooth and very drinkable for a dark lager or Dunkel.

I think this is the first dunkel ive tried (maybe not as i do not know what dunkel means)

Overall a very good drinkable darker lager or pilsner as warsteiner says imported german pilsner right on the label.

I would give this a try if you can find it and it has a good price as i found it for $6.65 a sixer.

L: Beautifully dark hues, almost looks a little red in the right light. Thin head that left a lacy trace.

S: Very malty and roasted aroma, which surprised me for lagers, but this is one of my first dunkels so I was a little unsure of what to expect. It was giving off some faint toffee odor as well.

T: Great taste and great body in my opinion. Thin and a little weak at the front but come in strong at the back. Toffee and roasted malt flavor was well done, there was even something that reminded me of coffee. I usually don't drink lagers, but the dark characteristics of this dunkel really impressed me. Very light hops, but enough to notice.

F: Went right along with the taste, weak at first but a full bodied feeling at the end. Its thick enough to be happy with a little, but light enough to drink a lot of.

O: Very impressed. I'll have to branch out more into dunkels after this. I would certainly buy this beer again, especially for the fall and winter months.

I was quite suprised by this brew. Very drinkable and very flavorful. poured out to a dark brown color with a 1/4 inch head of cream colored foam. Medium level of carbonation. Aromas of roasted malts, grain and earth. Taste was rather complex; flavors of nuts, roased malt, herbs and grain were well blended and kept the palate entertained. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, making this brew good for nearly any time of day or year. Good drinkability; I will be looking for this in bottles next trip to the beer store. Recommended.

Appearance - It pours a good dark translucent glassful with a decent head, good while it lasts.

Smell - Nice burnt sweet smokey beer smell.

Taste - Smooth and sweet, a little smokeyness and chocolate here and there. No bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Again with the smoothness...substantial.

Drinkability - The first two went down pretty easy...only 22 to go. No prob.

Appearance - Beautiful brown amber, clear, 2 finger light tan head, some patchy lacing.

Smell - Black Cherry (which I thought was surprising and wonderful) , molasses, sweet malt.

Taste - Roasted sweetness followed by few notes of tanginess. Finish is mild hop bitterness. Fairly neutral aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium weight, creamy, good carbonation.

Drinkability - A lighter body and fairly complex nose makes this beer very drinkable.

Overall I was very surprised by this beer. I liked it a lot. More than most reviewers I guess...Very tasty and easy going. A little lighter version of the Dunkel style.

The appearance to this beer looks exactly like that of a cola. If I didn't pour it myself I would swear it was a Pepsi or Coke from looks alone. I like the smell with some brown sugar, nuttiness and raisin. Sweet lightly toasted malts on the taste, with a cherry like finish. Bitterness is almost nonexistant. Thin mouthfeel but I expected that. Nothing mind blowing here, but with such a low ABV you can surely drink this by the liter. I know I do!

I find this beer to be much smoother than Warsteiner Premium Verum, the lighter colored version. Presentation is nice, a firm froth about half an inch on top after it is poured. Smell is of ripe hopes, and the aroma stays with the taste. Aftertaste is a mild bitter hopsy kind of taste. Very good all around.

12 oz bottle poured into a pilsner glass. pours a dark caramel chocolate color with a couple fingers of light tan head that is reduced to a soapy rim after a few minutes.

smells malty, with no hop character. caramel and chocolate malts are present, with a touch of pale malts as well. there is a light nutty base as well, which caps off the aroma. solid aroma, remaining crisp in the nose.

taste is malty up front, namely munich and caramel malts. very crisp and tight flavor profile. not much here, but what is present is excecuted pristinely. balanced and refreshing. a solid lager.

aftertaste is of light malts. not much hop character to speak of.

mouthfeel is a bit light, being medium-light bodied, with a creamy mouthfeel. decent.

drinkability is good. the brew is light, crisp, and refreshing, all the while presenting good concentration and flavor profile. a great dunkel. cheers!

This is a very drinkable German lager. Keep this in the fridge as a good goto beer. I really like it in a glass but is also very drinkable from the bottle (please don't hate me)! I love the light caramel color and bite.

Has a very toasty rich taste for such a mass produced beer.

Enjoy with all your favorite German foods.

S: I smell something sort of sweet
T: I actually really, really enjoy the taste of this beer. It is very consistent, and very full.
M: Fine
O: I am clueless as to why this beer only gets a B- overall, as of Apr 2011. This is a good, solid dark German beer.
