A better than usual pilsner. Clear blond color as it should be. Smooth creamy feel.

Type: 330-ml. bottle
Glass: Clear 15.25-oz. pilsner
From: Trader Joe’s in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $1.17
Purchased: Aug. 10, 2017
Consumed: Aug. 11, 2017
Reviewed as: German Pilsner
Misc.: No bottled on date

Picked this up on a recent trip to Trader Joe’s in Mission Valley. Had vaguely heard of this one and picked it up on a whim. Saw a 78 by Beer Advocate after the fact, so not expecting much.

Poured a straw clear color with two fingers of rocky white head. Lots of fast moving bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Average watery lacing. Excellent foamy retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled grain, grass, hay, white bread, hints of spoiled food, skunk and basic barley. (Smell - 3.25)

Taste followed the nose. Maltier than I anticipated. Got grain, grass, thick hay, farm manure, white bread, white cracker, clean barley and Shredded Wheat. (Taste - 3.25)

Light body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, earthy finish. (Feel - 3.50)

About what I thought it would be. A little rough around the edges. Would probably not drink again on purpose. Decent. (Overall - 3.25)

I have to admit that I know nothing of the style. I purchased 1 bottle for 99 cents from the broken case bin. I enjoyed it very much. Poured a clear yellow/gold into a tulip glass. Attractive generous white head. The lacing isn't over the top but enough to make a good presentation. The taste reminds me of a Becks or St. Pauly Girl from 30 years ago. The expiration date on the bottle is 3/22/18. ABV 4.8. Tastes like a German beer to me with a slight bitter finish. Once again I am not knowledgeable with this type of beer so I am calling how I see it.

Light gold yellow color.malt, cereal, hop aroma.taste is the same, the hops and malt is well balanced as it is neither too sweet or bitter. Sort of a middle of the road non offensive beer but I mean that as a compliment. Went well with a light lunch as it wasn't heavy and low abv

Bottle to pilsener glass.
The appearance was a slightly crisp yellow color with a finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off at a delicate pace. Not much lace, but seemed to speckle here and there.
The aroma had some sweet bready malts, light cereal, touch of smooth moving herbal qualities, with a chill floral hoppiness ever so slight in the background.
The flavor was moderately sweet pulling those previously mentioned aromas in quaintly but also keeping some distance between the malt bill and the hops. Mild bready sweet sort of aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine, somewhat low. ABV felt appropriate. Nice semi-malty sort of finish.
Overall, as a German pilsener, I find this hard to knock. Maybe if people would see this as German pilsener and realize that it's not going to relate very well to "modernized" beers.

This has that import.... kind of skunky taste. Of the German ones that come to mind.....Beck's and Saint Pauly's.... I would say this is not as good.

Look: Light, clear straw color, white head
Smell: Minimal creamy malts with grassy/spicy hop notes
Taste: Sweet pale malt up front backed by aforementioned hops work out to a dry, slightly bitter profile
Feel: Crisp, dry, and a bit astringent. Good carbonation and light body.

A decent representative of the style but nothing too special.

Very crisp and delicious beer. My go to if I don't have any becks. I can almost always find this fresh around here and it's only 20 bucks for a case.

No date. Pours a pale straw yellow into a fifteen ounce glass mug the same temperature as the beer. One finger white head that dissipates rapidly. Very little lacing.

Nose is sulfur. Quite skunky.

Tastes of sulfur. Some sweet malts. No hops

Thin and watery mouthfeel.

No even close to the better Pilsners I've had. Maybe its old and stale?

Rating from notes taken on a can from Germany in SoCal while waiting in line for Churchill's pub's anniversary party:

Low B (3.53) / GOOD

***
Review from notes taken on-draught at a bar in Amsterdam in Summer 2011:

HEAD: One finger worth of head. Pleasantly creamy and soft, with fair thickness. Average (~2-3 minute) retention.

BODY: Clear yellow. Obviously filtered.

AROMA: Cream. 2-row barley.

Mild aromatic intensity.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Creamy, emphasizing helles malts and 2-row barley. A bit stale; I think this keg may have been sitting about for a time.

Build is simple. It's balanced at least, but tastes pretty off. Again, I suspect a bad keg or dirty lines.

Smooth for the most part, but it does become coarse at different points in its structure, oddly, preventing it from feeling refreshing. Wet. Doesn't complement the taste particularly well.

OVERALL: Not a quality brew, expensive by Dutch standards, and not a beer I'd recommend - but then again the keg may be bad. As-is, it drinks like a "student beer" at best, which is to say it's a passable budget lager.

D+ / NOT RECOMMENDED
