Pouring a cellar temp 500 ml bottle into my trusty snifter. Picked up at the brewery a few weeks ago.
The beer pours a clear amber color from the bottle but is much more of a garnet red in my glass when held to a light source. Several active streams of carbonation rise to the surface.
A dense creamy khaki colored head foams up 3 cm even with a gentle pour. The foam has a bit of a light orange tint to it and leaves dense lattice as it fades and after each time I swirl the glass.
The nose is a little on the mild side. I get some toffee and caramel mixing with some sweeter fruit, pears and maybe cherry too? I also get a hint of earthy hop note. Nice nose, but could use a boost.
The first sip reveals a medium body with smooth texture and very mild and spacious carbonation. Drinks easy.
Flavor is much bolder than the nose. I get a lot of sweeter notes up front with some vanilla, toffee, and cherry hits. This moves to a little bit of a bitter hop bite, sort of earthy and and also a bit resiny or pine sap hit. Didnt expect this from the nose. Makes the beer much more American Barleywine than English IMO.
Booze comes through on the finish with a little bit of black pepper hit and some warming in my throat after each swallow.
I really enjoy this beer and appreciate the flavor complexity. If the nose were a little bolder, Id rate this even higher.

Pours a lovely, clear dark amber color with three fingers of sandy, tan head. Good retention and thick, clumpy lacing.

Shoe leather, stale hops, dark molasses and toffee in the nose with faint hints of cherry, chestnut and vanilla.

Same elements carry over to the taste, but pretty much in reverse order. Vanilla, toffee and medicinal cherry sweetness show first, but are easily balanced by some leather, light, earthy hop bitterness and strong alcohol burn.

Creamy, chewy feel with nice underlying carbonation.

This is a great beer now, but should age beautifully. Absolute pleasure to try.

Howler poured into 12 oz snifter

A: A deep amber, hazy very little head but it is a 5 day old growler

S: toffee, plums, raisins, figs

T: Nice sweetness up front with a rush of figs, dates, plums, a touch of clove, a little toffee with an ending of bitterness but it's mellow

M: Nice feel maybe a touch thin but not distractingly so

O: This drinks like an excellent old ale reminds me of fresh old stock or Old Curmudgeon with a lot more lingering bitterness this beer is fantastic it really is

Quick notes:

Hot, big beer! This is a definite kick in the teeth that falls somewhere in between the English and American BW styles.

It's got a massive malty sweetness: huge notes of caramel and toffee, with some dark fruit and brown sugar. It's also got a huge bitter bite: piney and resinous from the hops, perhaps spice and earth as well. More than hop flavors, they add a ton of bitterness.

Fairly boozy, but it is well-complemented by the sweetness and bitterness.

Overall, a very, very big brew that fans of both barleywine styles may appreciate.
