On tap at the brewery’s brewpub in Bend.

Look: clear dark copper body with a very good beige head and lots of sticky lacing.

Aroma: vague liqueur and light dark roasted grain with a suggestion of sweet syrup.

Flavor: Moderately strong;. Mildly bitter. Good complexity and rich flavor.

Caramel and auburn like root beer lookin' pour on this one, thin off white head, 1/6". Nose has a bit of alcohol, sherry, vanilla, old library notes.

Taste is a malty experience. Brown malt, maris otter, toffee, caramel, Werthers. Pretty viscous. Alcohol has a sting to it, slight bitterness, mild carbonation. Some earthy tobacco as it warms. Might be a decent cigar beer. A little bit of grapefruit on it. Brown molasses with the sugar rung out of it.

Quite handsome orange brew with abundant white foam in the bulb top Doppelbock glass. The first sniff is "uh-oh," like it's gone to bacteria land. But then I realize it's sweet and not spoiled. It just tastes peculiar. But the nose is still fruit in the compost pail.

Rather sweet and hugely malty. I think of chestnuts and funky Mexican mango. Some caramel, actually a lot of the stuff with an increasingly sugary taste. There is an acidic finish to add to the sweet 'n' sour sensation. And finally, a barky astringent bitterness, though not overly strong. Just enough to make this even less drinkable. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Platypus in Bend.

650 mL bottle poured into a goblet.

Appearance - Dark caramel body. Slight reddish tinge. Nice khaki head.

Smell - Some roasted malts, a bucket of caramel. Hops are a significant presence.

Taste - Almost an oversweet DIPA up front. Pine and grapefruit hop presence, but minimal. Tons of caramel. Roasted coffee comes through in the back end.

Mouthfeel - Medium low carbonation, some alcohol. Medium heavy body.

Overall - Interesting, but nothing subtle. Lots of caramel, and the roasted malt provides just enough to keep it interesting.
