Far from the Mexico boarder, but neighbors in mindset, Vermont's Bent Hill Brewery may dress for Nordic weather but they've got a taste for Mexican Hot Chocolate. ...and beer.

Chili Coconut Cinnamon Stout pours an ominous but innocent enough in a deep black shade while building a mocha, frothy, malty crown. With the nose drawing near, its the curiosity of cinnamon and spice that tingle the senses while also soothing them with chocolate, coffee, toffee and coconut cream. Sweeter on the tongue, its a melange of caramel, toffee, brown sugar and chocolate that provide a firm buffer from the spice to come.

As the sweetness seeps into the tastebuds, the taste of milk chocolate, coconut, vanilla and whipping cream are soothing to taste while the transition to head starts to build. The late taste is chocked full of cinnamon, coffee, toast and campfire but with a serious little capsaicin kick that prickles away at the throat.

Quite heated but well supported, the full bodied stout is soft and spicy at the same time. Despite its moderate alcohol content, the peppery head renders the beer a sipper that's met with caution. A heated pepper spice simmers on the throat in a malty-sweet finish with a long extension of roasty heat.

Can to becher pint glass and I'll be happy to rate! Because I'm glad this brewer has decided to take his job serious, finally.
The appearance was a thick solid brown pour with a darker close to black color with a small cap of eggshell white semi-foamy head swiftly gliding off. Just a touch of concave lace.
The aroma had a thoroughly enjoyable blend of sweet milk chocolate and coconut fixing itself to a clean spicy bill of chili powder, cinnamon and jalapenos.
The flavor seems to mix the spicy heat of chili powder and jalapenos with some cinnamon. Then a sweet milk chocolate and a sly coconut character. Semi-spicy and slight chocolatey aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation and ABV felt good. Good clean cinnamon heaty finish, no stickiness.
Overall, is this one of those pastry stouts? If so, actually I have to admit, I definitely like this now but when they bottled this I wouldn't even touch it with a ten foot pole (yes, they had infection issues a bit ago) but my hat goes off to one of Vermont's most resilient brewers - keep on keeping on, Mike and gang!

Moderate pour yields a 3/4 inch tan head over a dark brown body with some lacing. Nose of cinnamon foremost, followed by a bit of chocolate and coconut. Taste of cinnamon and chili pepper with a little coconut and very slight chocolate. Heat from the chili peppers keeps increasing a tad with each sip. I love heat so it won't bother me at all. Some others might have a problem, but buyer beware, read the label. Ha! Good feel for a 5.4% abv stout and overall, a nice chili beer and would have again. Cheers!

L - cracked the can and foam starts bubbling up out of the can. Not a gusher, just excited! The head is the most impressive part about how this looks. Big and fluffy and thick. Looks like heavy cream. Settles faster than I'd like. Otherwise it just looks like a stout.

S - cinnamon dominates with the peppers giving it an aggressive, chunky punchiness. Soft coconut bleeds forth finished with lactose and vanilla.

T - shaved coconut is quickly beaten back by raw cinnamon and chili peppers. You know that feeling when you do the cinnamon challenge and the cinnamon feels chalky and dry? Getting that in the back of my throat and the pepper heat only amplifies the effect. Confusing. Milk chocolate kinda hands out in the middle, trying to bring peace to the chaos. Overall, the flavors are a bit thin, but punch like they think they're tough. They're not. Finishes with some lingering heat.

F - thinner than I had hoped for what this stout boasts. I'm seeing it's only 5.4% so I guess it's whatever.

O - there's a lot going on here, but it is rather unrefined and seems forced. Feels like they brewed a milk stout and then dumped in coconut milk, whole chili peppers, topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon. As a result, the flavors are jarring and unbalanced. There is no flow or order. A tornado of aggressive flavors all vying for the top spot. Rushed and lacks finesse.

Pours dark brown with creamy head but not too much lacing, Aroma is the best feature s it has spicy chilies with a sweet touch. Unfortunately, flavor is muddled and not getting much depth, slight coconut in finish. Body is worse, light-bodied and lacking feel. Expected a cornucopia of flavors and get something quite monotone.

Collaboration brew with Craft Beer Cellar in Waterbury, VT. Label states it uses roasted jalapenos and serrano peppers. My first from this brewery. 750ml split 3 ways.

A - Dark brown pour. A beige head is big and puffy at first, only to fizz away to nothingness after a minute or so.

S - Pretty decent pepper pesence, I recently got some serrano hot sauce and I'm instantly reminded of that. Definite chocolate dessert malt, some licorice, and weird burnt flavor.

T - FIrst thing I notice is pretty nice coconut/chocolate/dark fruit interplay, followed by a pretty good dose of chile spice, though the pepper flavors seemed a little less refined here the heat is definitely more intense. Finishes quite spicy and somewhat desserty with light roast and some cinnamon noticeable as well.

M - Thin-feeling but decent body for the low ABV, medium-high carbonation, lingering spice heat after a bit. I appreciate the fact that they went for a low ABV stout, but it seems like a bigger body/ABV would better suit the flavors here.

O - It seems like it has some kinks to work out - obviously an interesting and wacky flavor profile and this pulls it off impressively - chili, coconut and cinnamon all stand out in their own way and meld good with a chocolatey base stout. But the spice seems over the top for this beer, it would be much better if it was toned down and really let that chocolate/coconut shine more.
