went there for the oktoberfest celebrations three times this month. the decor is nice and the atmosphere is fun (the chinese waitresses wear traditional german costume!), but gets crowded during this special event. the mini-tent they put up for the month gives you a slightly pathetic taste of the real deal, but hey, it's a taste nonetheless.

the food is standard german fare, and prepared decently. pretzels are free and unlimited during the oktoberfest.

usually only a pale, dunkel and sometimes a weisz, but during the fest, they offer an authentic marzenbier, coppery brown in color and malty - contrary to the actual paulaner tent in munich, by all accounts i've heard of recently.

service is generally attentive and yet not overly intrusive, unlike some other western restaurants in china.

all this said, this is a VERY pricey affair. and they've got competition starting to appear. the happy hour is literally only one hour: 5-6pm

Not a bad place at all, and considering the local alternatives, well worth the money. It has been a few years but I believe that the beer cost about the equivalent of USD15-18 per liter. I recall three beers on tap. The food was good as well. There are several other Paulaners in China, including at least two in Shanghai--one built in a communist general's old mansion now redecorated with wooden floors imported from a church in Germany. The Kempinski location is less attractive, but the beer is good (and cold! a quality often lacking in Chinese beers).

Paulaner Brauhaus is located in the Lufthansa Center/Kempinski Hotel in Beijing Chaoyang District. On a recent trip, I found myself here often. Though I certainly had a great appreciation for the uniqueness of the local establishments, this place provided a periodic and welcome taste of the West. Traditional German fare along with Paulaner brews are served; just one is brewed on premises, a tasty unfiltered lager (Kellerbier) and some imported. It’s a bit of the Fatherland right in Beijing. Managed by and largely staffed by German ex-pats, this is as close as one gets to the real deal…in fact it’s as good as any I’ve had in Germany, IMHO. Atmosphere is traditional and authentic bierhalle style. Extremely friendly and attentive staff. I look forward to visiting Paulaner Brauhaus again and highly recommend it. Prosit!
