bottle into glass
2021 edition (bought on annual, December 1st release date)
Moderate, off-white head. Medium honey/amber look. A bit of sweetness to the aroma, which is made up of subtle, spiced caramel and honey. A good mouthfeel with a prominent sharpness, which sustains through the finish. That sharpness overrides much of the flavors, which is somewhat sweet, as it should be, caramelized medium toasted malts and a bit of a roasted note, amidst the predominate bite characteristic.

2008 vintage courtesy of BrewerB, thanks Brian!
This beer pours a cloudy, muddy, creek water clay amber in color with slight carbonation. The nose features brown sugar, molasses, raisin, with a touch of vanilla. The flavors are sweet and rich. You get raisin bread, cinnamon roll, brown sugar, and soda bread. Its a little light in body, as expected. This is drinking pretty well for a vintage barleywine. I wouldn't age it further but five years of ageability is certainly possible for this beer.

bomber split with dirtman, little nightcap, you know how we do...
a: one of those not-so-necessary nightcaps dished out after an already full night of craft beer, served in a short snifter, deep caramel amber in color, hazy, nice off-white head with good retention
s: a rich, aromatic barleywine with heady notes of grain and caramel, heavily malty with a range of sweet, dark fruit aromas, estery, deeply citric and pine hop nose, very nice
m: heavy bodied, nearly syrupy on the tongue, with a cleansing light to moderate carbonation
t: always a big fan of a hugely malted barleywine with a good balance of hops, big caramel/toffee and dark fruit flavors - date and fig, brown sugar, pine and citrus, heavily sweet, coating the tongue with rich malt flavors
o: a densely flavored, satisfying sipping barleywine, particularly great as an early-morning finisher

Dec 2011
On tap at Big Time on release date, 2011. Place was packed.
Poured into snifter. Dark amber, with a nice lacing.
Smells malty with a decent hop aroma. Little bit of pine and a little bit of booze.
There was a really nice sweet tang going for it, minimal alcohol burn.
There was still some carbonation for it as it wasn’t aged too long.
I could see this getting more complex with age. As it stands it was pretty good.

Had on tap at Big Time at the release. Review from notes.
A: Poured into a snifter, Old Wooly is a hazy burgundy with a small off-white head on top with minimal retention but some nice lacing all around the glass.
S: Rather fruity with lots of raisin and fig aromas, some caramel, toffee, and faint chocolate.
T: Very fruit forward - more raisins and figs, slightly sweet up front. There is some faint roast, chocolate, caramel, and I got just a hint of mint.
M: Medium bodied, alcohol hidden very nicely. Extremely smooth.
O: Very impressed. Had a few glasses of this and grabbed a few bottles to sit on. Interested to see how it ages.
