Can: Poured an orangey color ale with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of citrusy hops notes with subtle bittern notes is quite nice. Taste is mostly dominated by citrusy hops with some floral undertones, light fruity apricot notes and light bitter notes are also noticeable in the aftertaste. Body is about average with good carbonation. Well brewed overall but floral undertones notes could be more pronounced.

473 mL can from the LCBO; canned Sept 18 2017, listed at 7% and served slightly chilled. Reviewed on my phone; this is also my first Brimstone beer to date.

Pours hazy orange-amber in colour, with an inch-thick crown of frothy, off-white tinged foam gathering atop. It fades in due time - more than five minutes in this case, with a big, messy swath of sticky lace deposited onto the glass as it seeps away, until only a bubbly film remains. Looks great, but it's not very aromatic - I'm getting light notes of orange citrus, pine sap, lychee berries and a mild caramelized malt sweetness, with just a hint of spicy hops. Not bad, but not fragrant enough to inspire high hopes for that critical first sip.

A strong IPA - in abv that is. The flavours themselves lean towards bready pale malts and caramel sweetness, with muddled orange, grapefruit and apricot notes blended in. Earthy, dirty and a tad spicy on the tail end, with resiny bitterness lingering through the finish and into a lasting aftertaste. Not boozy initially, although as the glass warms that 7% starts to come through a bit more clearly. Medium-full in body, with low carbonation levels and a soft, smooth, wet mouthfeel. A passable offering at best.

[Updated Jan 22 2019]

Another tall can; dated Jan 7 2019 so this is a lot fresher than the serving I reviewed last time around. I'm still not convinced that Brimstone's Sinister Minister is anything special - everything I said above mostly still applies, though I suppose I don't find the bitterness to be quite as much of a nuisance, possibly because the stone fruit notes are slightly more prominent (particularly on the nose). Not bad, but easily lost in the crowd.

Final Grade: 3.71, a serviceable B grade.

Copper orange with a slight haze, moderate fine bubbled carbonation, and a finger of yellowish head.

Smells of pine sap, oranges, spice and creme brulee.

Tastes of pine, oranges, creme brulee and grapefruit pith.

Medium to syrupy body with medium to low carbonation.

Got in Guelph, ON, drinking in New Hamburg, July 20th, 2019. Very decent, very fresh.

Pours a clear amberish gold with a whispy one finger of head. Head breaks quickly leaving a few wisps of foam. Decent lacing.

Smell is very muted. A touch of piney hops with maybe some citrus. Hard to tell. Definitely getting malts though, caramel and bready they come through almost more than the hops.

The flavor is led by the hops,piney/pithy and bitter. The malts come in on the backend and balance the finish nicely.

Feel is medium weight and carbonation is okay. Finish is on the dry end of the spectrum.

Sininster Minister is more minister than sinister. A middle of the road IPA that isn't offensive, but won't make you jump up and down either.

Pours a nice transparent golden colour with a tall fluffy off white head which leaves significant lacing. Aroma has hints of citrus & tropical fruit. Taste has enough hop flavour that it's correctly called an IPA but it's a pretty boring hop flavour. There's not much going on in terms of citrus, grassiness, tropical, or dank; just some rather dull hop flavour. The sweet malts are nice and creamy and a mild bitterness remains on the tongue at the end of each sip. I enjoyed it ok after a long day but I don't expect to buy it again with all the great IPAs out there.

500 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. Purchased from the LCBO for $4.50 CDN. This edition is advertised at 7.0% ABV.

Appearance - hazy dark orange color with honey brown hues. A fine frothy finger of off-white head that has good staying power and leaves behind some curtain like lacing.

Smell - some darkness, loads of grapefruit and possible some papaya. Hints of mango and possibly even some lychee. Massive citrus all around.

Taste - rather bold here. Loads of citrus, grapefruit especially with an earthy darkness to the flavor as well. Hints of mango and some pine resin too. The flavor combo isn't usually my preference, ( dank citrus beers don't do it for me) but this is very good.

Mouthfeel - smooth and juicy with a medium body. Drying finish at the very end with some grapefruit flavors. Carbonation is medium, maybe slightly less than average but works well here.

Overall - one of the better bees I've had in the past year and certainly a beer that gives me hope. Wasn't impressed with this breweries last offering but the Sinister Minister is one bad ass dude (beer). Worth a try and likely to repeat another purchase, at least until Lake effect floods the shelves in the coming weeks.
