About 6 years ago I got a box from a dude, and it included some beers. This was one of them.

Pours black, brown head 1/3". The aroma was roasted malt, dark fruit and alcohol. Had that chocolate malt (not chocolate) aspect of the nose.

Taste was more dry malt note as opposed to roasted or scorched. Lots of bitterness here, comes off around 100 ibu. Ample hopping rate. Alcohol was there to be sure. There is a certain amplification to all of it, the bitterness, the booziness, the dry dark fruit red wine metallic scratchiness to the back of the throat. The one thing that was different here was the body, wasn't really all that thick. I'm usually the guy complaining about too much viscosity, but this one leaned the other way.

This was a bit of a challenge to finish. I would have preferred to split it with a few people, just one of those beers that after a few ounces you're ready to move on to something else. Not understanding the ratings love for this one, but then again, maybe I do: small brewery + huge abv = beeradvocate's thing ratings wise.

Winter 2014 vintage; drank 3/15/15 @ the Yarchives.

Poured from a bottle into a glass.

Black/brown appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small dark khaki head; minimal lace.

Banana, caramel & red wine notes in the nose.

Medium thick mouthfeel.

Candle wax, fresh earth & milk chocolate flavors up front; banana notes on the finish. Mild booze heat emerged as this warmed. A hearty, unique take on the style. Well done!

Poured to a shifter, thick and black with no head to speak of. Aroma is roasted malt, hints of coffee. Flavor is heavy roast, coffee, plum, raisin and bitter cocoa. Thick, oily mouthfeel and a big boozy finish.
This one does not go down easy. Terrific beer!

12 oz. bottle, no bottled on date, vintage Winter 2014 printed on the front label. My first beer from 51st Ward Beer Company, I have had this bottle aging for about a year or so. Label lists a 12.20% abv. "It Will Thrash You!".

Poured into a Big Eddy snifter glass.

A - Pours a thick creamy black body. One finger of creamy caramel head that falls to a ring.

S - Aroma is creamy, chocolatey, alcoholic, & fruity with notes of caramelized cherries and subtle bubblegum.

T - Smooth, creamy, chocolatey, fudgey. Notes of vanilla, marshmallow fluff, and subdued chocolate covered cherry tartness. Flavors of chocolate / fudge / cream and slight char / roast dominate. Notes of natural sweetness & vanilla extract are present.

M - Exceptionally smooth & creamy. Ridiculously smooth and easy-drinking. Sticky & sugary. This thing has mellowed into one smooth beast. The high abv is hardly noticeable except for a mild warmth after drinking.

Overall, I heard mixed reviews about this and other 51st Ward beers, but I would assuredly say that age has mellowed this beast into fine form. Highly recommended drinking now or later.

A - Superb dark brown-black color, opaque, with a tan head that fades to minor lacing.

S - Dark fruit, cocoa powder, and a big hit of alcohol booze.

T - Bright hit of chocolate and dark fruit. Plum fruit skin.

M - Warmth. Sticky.

O - A very big, burly brew that delivers on the name. Krispier indeed.

L - Jet black. Poured hard, but no real head. Syrupy thick legs
S - Some roasted malts and hints of coffee. Sweet, with a hint of something sour
T - Dark malts with a lot of sweetness up front. Simmers down a bit but has a slightly tart finish
F - Descent body. only light carbonation, but appropriate for a big stout.

Overall, a passable imperial stout, but frankly not much more than a descent home brew attempt. Some off flavors and at $5 for 12oz, this is the last time I bother with 51st ward...

Dark brown with a lot of active carbonation but little head retention.

Smells of dark roast, bakers chocolate, and wet cardboard.

Flavor is almost all that dark roast, but comes along with a musty and tinny aftertaste. Very boozy.

Thin mouthfeel for style as well as higher than normal carbonation.

A decent stout, but with some noticeable off flavors and light body.

Picked up a 12oz. bottle of The Krispier Karl a week ago.
Thought it would be good to try them back to back.
A - Pours black, black, black with small tan head that slowly fades away and leaves lacing on the sides.
S - To my nose, the aroma of coffee and chocolate was stronger in this version..
T - Solid flavor that you would expect from an Imperial Stout. Some coffee, some chocolate plus a slightly bitter alcohol finish.
M - Medium mouth feel, low carbonation.
O - I would not say this is a better version of the Krispy Karl. I would say they are about the same with more of an alcohol kick from this version. To really make this version special and different they should consider aging it (or aging it longer).

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. No bottled on date listed, but I know this was recently released.

A- Pours black, a small amount of dark brown head quickly fades to sides of the glass.

S- Big aromas of coffee and chocolate are noted on the smell.

T- Chocolate malts and coffee are the huge flavors initially up front. After that there seems to be a bit of hop character too.

M- Thick, low carbonation, very easy sipping and flavorful.

Nice RIS for sure, but maybe a little more carbonation next time.
