Review from 5/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark orange brown. Small fine off-white head that dissipated quickly. Aroma of sweet bready malt, dark fruit. Light flavors of caramel malt, light and dark fruit. Very light hop finish. Light to medium bodied. Rather subdued and not too exciting.

Appearance: Pours an ice tea brown color with a rather modest head for a Belgian; leaves a few strands of lace here and there

Smell: Caramel and maybe some golden raisins

Taste: Caramel with a developing subtle tobacco tone; brown bread after the swallow

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Another rather clumsy attempt at a Belgian by Pike; I have had some good beers from them but they are way out of their element with Belgians; this beer would be better classified as a somewhat hoppy brown ale - it is certainly drinkable but lacks the complex flavors I would expect in a dubbel

22oz. served in a Chimay goblet.

A - Pours a garnet hued dark brown. Thick cream colored head forms a razor thin pattern of micro-bubbles. Thick lacing around the glass.

S - Wow this smells just like Golden Grahams! Sweet toasted wheat bread, honey sweetness, plums, grapes, alcohol, phenolic yeast, brown sugar.

T - Tart plums, thin vinous fruit, brown sugar, cocoa, bready yeast, slight oxidation.

M - Medium thin bodied, low carbonation, slightly tart finish.

Great aroma but the fruit tartness, while nice, seems to take away from the malt. Nothing complex but has an interesting character.

Poured into a Delirium Tremens snifter. No freshness date.

A- Pours a dark brown, almost black, color with a ½ inch head that retains a bit before retreating to a thin ring around the glass leaving tufts of lacing and some surface foam.

S- Sweet and hoppy. Not the typical smell of a dubbel.

T- Mildly roasted malt with herbal hop bitterness. No Belgian yeast characteristics as the style would imply. Tastes good but is nothing like I expected. Odd twang in the aftertaste.

M- Medium-high carbonation and a semi-heavy body.

O- This is not a dubbel. It’s a hoppy brown ale. Good, but not what I look for in the style.

Bottle purchased at the brewpub.

A - Pours very dark brown and cloudy. Good carbonation coming up and a silky light brown head. Good thick lace

S - Rich dark fruit and strong yeast with some sweet spice.

T - Alot of the same with some fairly strong spice. Dark fruit, yeast, and strong spice. Not sweet in the sense a dubbel should be. After a while the spice peels back and more brown sugar and fruit flavours come through.

M - Strong carbonation, creamy medium to full body and a spicy/dry finish.

O/D - Way too spicy for me. For a Dubbel this doesn't seem to work at all. Yet after some time the fruit and sugar flavours came through more. But still, if I wasn't bored I would have poured this out pretty quick. Off for a dubbel.

Pours hazy-ish brown that isn't transparent until you reach the bottom of the glass. Finger-thick foam that sits atop the beer until the beer is finished. Good amount of lacing on the glass when it's gone.

Smells fruity and estery, in a typical belgian fashion. Sweet and roasty. Small amount of hops.

Tastes great. Sweet and malty, very low hops subdued by fruity yeast characteristic.

Mouthfeel is sweet but not overly thick. Normal carbonation, which for the style makes it a tad undercarbonated.

Overall I liked this beer a lot. Sucked it down a little too fast with dinner. I wouldn't say it follows the Belgian dubble style perfectly but it is certainly a good beer.

I don't know, but this bottle was just plain terrible. I poured a bottle into couple of snifters for myself and a friend. He warned me that Pike is known for being unreliable in their quality control, and that people are saying that bottles seem to be infected too often.

We both think the bottle I got may have been infected, or it's simply a real bad beer. It's my first time drinking something from this brewery, so that's a disclaimer I'll have to make.

There was a strong and unpleasant funky aroma that's unlike anything I have smelled ever. The taste was terrible. I couldn't even comfortably drink a sip without grimacing. It was so bad that the rest of the beer was poured down the drain.
