Pours a nice 1 1/2 finger headw ith good retention that stays for a while down the glass. Nice ruby/brown cloudy color.

Smell is of toffee and toasted malts. A little bit of apple and plum fruitiness lie underneath.

Toated malts with tofee are first noticed with a sort of sweet green apple undertone that is only noticeable when paying close attention. This is finished with a dry hop bitterness and a green apple sweetness aftertaste. I had a 3.5-4.0 on nose and taste, but I will take points on taste as the beer is slightly astringent from the alcohol with a little bit of dry tannins producing very mild off flavors.

The sweetness of the apple really sticks to the palate. The mouthfeel is a dry and I feel that the beer gets slightly cloying because of this.

I like this beer and I think it is well done. I think the apple sweetness may bother some, but I like it. I think it mixes well with the malts and provides for a sessionable beer.

This is my favorite style, so of course I'm going to be a bit picky. To start, I take issue with this being called a Scotch-Style Ale, since it's only 6.5%. This should be listed as a Scottish Ale. Just saying...

A: Brown-amber hue, thin head.

S: Malty aroma, very little in the way of hops. Looking good so far.

T: Smoky / peaty! Pushes the smokiness to the limit of what I consider OK, but holds back just at the edge. Balanced nicely by the malty, almost chewy body.

M: Great mouthfeel, excellent body, as a Scottish ale should be.

D: Quasi-drinkable, only because of the smokiness. Rein in the smokiness vs maltiness, and you've got yourself a Scottish ale worthy of a session.
