Big thick chocolate head which settles down pretty quick, sans lacing on top this black as night beer.

Nose is chocolate, molasses and not too much else.

Taste is doing the same thing, but brings in a little coffee and bitterness to join the chocolate and molasses.

Mouthfeel is silky and smooth and generally pleasant as all hell! Such a pleasant drinking experience.

22 oz. bottle, shared with friends.
Pours pitch black, thick almost oily legs hanging on the glass. Tight beige head lasts nicely before fading to a floating cap. Thick, foamy lacing all around the glass.
Smells of roasted malt, some coffee, cocoa.
Taste of some coffee to start, bittersweet chocolate. More bitterness than expected on the end, earthy hops.
Good carbonation, medium body, creamy and smooth mouth feel.
Overall, a good stout, but more hoppy bitterness than malty sweetness. A plus for some, a minus for others.
Personal preference gives it top marks.

look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Pours dark as night with a small 1/4" head of tan bubbles on top. The head was pretty thick and creamy, so it looked like it was going to be there for a good while. As the head receded it left a decent amount of lacing on the glass.

Aroma: I initially got some Chocolate along with some dry roasty and almost nutty aromatics. Some floral hops are defintely noticeable in here, and become more pronounced as it warms.

Taste: The flavor has a defined roasty component, but the overall balance is rather pleasant. The roast is a bit acidic, and lingers on the back of the palate for a good while into the finish. The beer doesn't really show it's strength as any alcoholic warming is obscurred by the acid. The dark malts give this beer a very subtle ashy impression, but that is not objectionable in this case. The beer is somewhat nutty, and the hops are playing a lot bigger role in the flavor and aroma than in the bittering. The finish is balanced.

Opinion: This is a pretty good beer. I like the balance. The roast is a bit acidic for my taste, so that detracts from this beers overall drinkability...but other than that, it is a really presentable beer and a good example of the Foreign Extra. I would drink this beer again, but probably not after a Koelsch like I did tonight.

Pike isn't a beer favored by me, but I haven't had this one yet, so I am going to review it after a Port Old Viscosity.. and my buddy MaltBombPete sniffed some up his nose... burned...

- Nice creamy frothy light mocha head... lacing all over... thin blanket on top... Rich dark black and brown... can't see through a thing..

- Light sweet oats... oatmeal.. grain, bread... light cocoa... and a bit of pine hops... bitter, biscuit,..

- Bready and biscuit... creamy grain, oats... bitter hops... balanced... I am loving this stout.. nice rich cocoa and sweet caramel toffee aftertaste...

- Medium bodied, creamy... slightly bitter dryness...

- Overall a very underrated stout... something people should be raving about and asking for in trades... light, creamy and perfectly drinkable.

Served in my trusty Devil's Backbone willibecher.

Apparently Total Wine down here is carrying these exclusively (in the area). Right on. This guy pours an opaque black-brown topped by a nice finger of tan foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, smoky coffee, cocoa powder, and some light raisins. The taste is pretty similar, with notes of figs, coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, light molasses, and a slight touch of leather. The body is a solid medium, with a light carbonation and very smooth feel. Overall, a very nice and easy-drinking little stout; a nice change of pace from the overly heavy and chunky ones.

Had this at Pike and it was very good. Could drink several of them with pleasure. Feel like they need to make a higher ABV version.

Poured into a New Belgium goblet black with a one fingered tan head. Minimal lacing. Scents of chocolate and roasted malts. Not much of a hop presence in the taste, mostly smokey dark chocolate with nutty flavors on the back end of the palatte. There isn't a presence of alcohol, which makes this a good drinkable stout.

Poured from a bomber into my DFH snifter. Split with BAs infi, NYManc and johnjae.

Pours a dark brown that manages to actually stay brown as opposed to resolving into the typical inky blackness of most stouts. Smallish head that dissipates quickly, leaving some sticky, splotchy lacing. Smell is full of dark chocolate and some dark fruits. Just a slight bit of alcohol towards the end.

Taste is also full of dark chocolate with some roasted malts. The entire flavor profile is pretty roasted, come to think of it. Hoppiness is non-existent and all the bitterness comes from the chocolate and slight hints of coffee in the aftertaste. A very, very faint hint of alcohol towards the end. Mouthfeel is pretty slick, with a hefty body and a bit of chewiness. Goes down pretty smooth and finishes dry.

Drinkability is actually quite good. I'm suitably impressed by this stout. Didn't go into it expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. A respectable ABV and a pleasing flavor make this a great beer to share with friends.

Great drinkability for a hopped up stout, thanks to dnichols. Pours black with active character, above average mouthfeel. Hoppy without overbearing, and still balanced roast and chocolate that are lively and citrussy. King of hoppy stouts.Refreshing.

Purchased one of these fine bottles directly from the brewery in downtown Seattle while visiting family at UW. The restaurant staff is very welcoming and helpful. I recommend you drop in on them for a great experience.
===

Appearance: Very dark brown, silky caramel around the edges. With a careful pour, a delicate head is created.

Aroma: Of a fine espresso with a hint of dark chocolate

Taste: Taking a small sip, a subtle citrus flavoring, and a touch of bitterness.

Mouth feel: Nice foaminess with just the right amount of carbonation.

Drink-ability: Goes down smoothly when enjoyed in small sips.

Serving type: bottle

Overall: A nice solid stout for a chilly rainy night in Seattle.
