Poured into a Dogfish signature snifter.

A- Pours an incredibly opaque black color with a 1/2 inch dark tan head that has good retention before riding down to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and random bubbly surface foam. Solid sheets of lacing.

S- Roasty and nutty with elements of dark chocolate and molasses. Some sweet caramel is involved as well.

T- Delicately smooth roasted malt with small notes of oak and smoke. The 7% ABV is concealed incredibly well. There's some bitterness on the back end but the highlights are in the chocolaty, nutty and sometimes coffee-like malt base.

M- Chewy, creamy and soft with medium carbonation and a hefty body.

O- Another winner from Pike. These guys don't get enough exposure in the beer community IMO. Would love to have this on nitro pour and/or cask.

22oz into a tulip. Pours a solid black w/ a thick frothy mocha head that leaves a thin film.

Aroma is roasty, earthy, nutty, fruity.

Taste leads off w/ notes of chocolate and dried cherries, countered by a soft bitterness. Hops clearly evident.

Mouthfeel is balanced, medium-bodied, slick.

Overall an all-around solid stout.

Poured into a snifter.

A: Dark brown with two-finger tan, creamy head that lasted a few minutes. Nice lacing.

S: First thing I noticed was chocolate and then roasted malt.

T: Moderate sweetness and light bitterness. Chocolate and roasted malt. Coffee.

M: Medium to full bodied with lively carbonation.

O: Pretty good stout. The mouthfeel could have been a bit smoother and warmer.

Pours out a dark black with two fingers of dark tan foamy head that lasts for about two minutes and leaves behind some medium levels of lacing on the glass. Creamy and silky medium-heavy body with soft carbonation.

Smells like deep charred malt and black coffee / chocolate with a squirt of blueberry pancake syrup in it. No really, I'm serious. Tastes of char at first, but transitions into a floral / herbal hopped dark chocolate blend that ends with a whispered gasp of dark fruit in the finish. The hopping is unusually prominent on the palate for a typical export stout, but I'm totally okay with that because it's not heavy-handed enough to detract from the roasted and charred malts at all.

In summary, I can see why this is one of the more highly-rated export stouts on this website, it blends slightly higher than usual hopping with clean and dry black coffee / chocolate and a touch of blueberry fruitiness over a really nice texture without relying upon acridness as the sole source of bitterness. The only criticism I can muster is that the hopping presented to the palate isn't as noticeable as it could be in the nose.
