The Sour Mecca of San Diego. The Cascade of So Cal. The Taj Mahal of Tart....you get the idea.

Toolbox regularly has about 8 sours on the menu, most of which are fruit flavored and are awesome. In recent months, theyve included some fruity IPAs and a couple stouts (which they havent done since they FIRST opened and had a different head brewer) which is a nice touch.

Truth be told, yours truly has never had a bad drink here. Everything has been good but the standout to me personally has always been Purple Drink (or the BA variety). The tasting room isnt the biggest and can get cramped on a busy day but waiting in line to stand and drink a beer is worth it here.

Made sure to stop at Toolbox on my way down for a beercation in San Diego. Insta pictures available #officialbrewbroads

The space is what you expect from a smaller brewing facility, an industrial stripped look appropriate to it's task. Speaking as a young woman who spent more than a couple first dates ruining my shoes and looking out of place at a brewery, I did appreciate the cleanliness and the decor which make this facility feel warm and inviting. Right off the bat I was impressed by the diversity of the menu. San Diego for all it's innovative spirit is still the posterchild of Westcoast hopcentrism. I was pleased to see only the requisite two styles of IPA as I personally feel if you do something well you won't need umpteen hundred variants. When asked what I'd like to sample the bartended was tickled to hear I would like one of everything, and what we drank was exceptional! I made sure to pick up several bottles of their stand out beer 'United Expression'in honor of International Women's Collaboration Brew Day, but mainly because it's an incredible combination of flavors I couldn't wait to pair dishes with. 10 months of aging yielded this American Wild Ale produced a well-balanced combination of flavors. Sweet from the Hibiscus to the literal ("La Jolla" sea) salt. The Hibiscus was sweet but never too sweet, the Brett was razor sharp, but never cutting.

One of my favorite stops on my vacation to San Diego. The place itself is simple but spacious. Bar itself is not very big but lots of room to roam. The beers were all fantastic with mostly sours and a couple of more "normal" beers. Would visit them in a heartbeat next time in in SoCal.

I squeezed in a beer here just around closing time, which felt all too early although it may have been a Sunday night when I visited.

The space was essentially empty and the server was ready to see me out as soon as possible. Fair enough, I ain't mad at him.

I enjoy Toolbox's beers but do find they often have a strong kettle sour taste and feel that is easily identifiable and not nearly as clean as the best wild ales out there. But as a visit in northern San Diego, I find this place still worth a visit.

Toolbox Brewing is tucked away inside a nondescript industrial park and there really isn’t any signage on the road indicating you’re at the right spot. Once inside the spot has a bit of a retro vibe with numerous in-house sour/funky offerings. When I was there Toolbox also had 2 bottles for sale as well. While Toolbox does not serve food, the vibe is quite chill and dog friendly. While Toolbox still has a ways to go, Toolbox is already making some pretty delicious beers!

Very cool place. Lots of places to sit and chill out. Some great tunes were playing on a Saturday afternoon I was there.

Beer is decent but I didn't try anything that I was graving to bring back to the east coast for drinking buddies.

Only gave a 3 for selection since they only had funk and sours. If you don't like those styles, you won't find much here you enjoy.

Owner was cool and it was pleasant chatting with him.

Stopped by while on 78 Corridor Beer safari No County San Diego. Early Sunday afternoon and place was close to empty. Though people came and went for growlers. Danielle behind bar and Loren at stool near by shared a lot about Toolbox and its start as well as its intentions. Made for a nice afternoon of sipping, tasting and swapping stories from kettle sours to J.Wakefield Brewing fund raiser.
Beer was great. Able to try 4-5 beers and all very good; some very good.
A good new standout in a San Diego-world of good breweries.

One of the few places in SD (about 45 minutes away from downtown SD, in Vista) that specializes in sour beer. If that's your thing, then you really have to check this place out!

Great beers! I had the XLupus, the Tart X Apricot, the Grass Fed Lettuce, and the Purple Drink and I loved all of them, though they were more sour than saison-y (which I prefer anyhow.) Bit crowded but I feel that it's that way only because it's so small inside. Hope they expand! I look forward to returning soon.

UPDATE: They did expand! They're doing great stuff still and I return pretty much every time I'm on my back from SD, sometimes I go just to go to Toolbox! The only sad thing is the place next door, 'Bit O' Britian' is now closed.

This is just a really good place to hang out, relax and try some amazing beers. Their sour program has had some keepers so far. If Purple Drink, Tart-X with Apricots or Grass-fed Lettuce are on, get them immediately. Relaxed and casual atmosphere and it tends to not get horribly crowded, at least the times I've been there. A great addition to the SD beer scene and I'm really excited to see what they'll do in the future.

Really enjoyed this place, even on a cloudy rainy day. They were very informative with my questions on their beer. Dog friendly, too. A great place.

I was so excited for this place to open and it did not disappoint. It's a small pub, set in a business park storefront. The place is open, clean and the staff is friendly. Design is very interesting, with some 50's style pin-up girl photos on the walls and some very cool industrial design elements. Atmosphere aside, the beer is where this place really excels. What kind of place offers 5 Brett beers and a bourbon barrel-aged vanilla/coffee porter at its soft opening? And what kind of place can pull them all off? Toolbox manages to do just that. I wish they had some food trucks or maybe even some bowls of Pub Mix, but that's my only complaint. But still, they are my new favorite North County San Diego brewery. Bravo.
