Pours a very bright yellow with a fleeting white head. Smell is fruity hops with malt background. Taste follows with a good crisp finish. Excellent mouthfeel - not too dry but certainly not sweet - just right! Overall a great refreshing beer for a hot Florida day.

MIA Brewing Co. "305 Golden Ale"
12 fl. oz. can without freshness dating
$2 @ Weis Market, Conshohocken, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Well you've got to like, or heavily dislike, MIA's graphics: very 80's, and very "Miami". The beer looks good too! It's a mostly clear gold beneath a short head of bright white that unfortunately dies away too quickly. Bummer. And of course there's no lacing left behind, but perhaps with each sip... we'll see. The aroma is quite basic: lightly sweetish and lightly grainy malt and a little bit of apple-like and lemony fruitiness. It's clean, and perhaps a bit floral, but that's it. The flavor is sharper and less sweet than the aroma suggests, and there are more hops to it: lemony, a hint herbal, and just slightly woody almost like cedar or oak. There's not a lot of bitterness to it but it's balanced, and the hops linger in the mostly dry finish. It's medium-light in body, perhaps even light-medium, and delicately crisp leaving it quite drinkable in that respect. There are no defects and it's nicely balanced from start to finish. Nicely done.

A thanks to the captain of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a bright golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smellis grainy, some lemons. Taste is grains, lemons, some tartness, easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer.

Our local fishwrap's beer columnist recently remarked on the arrival of MIA Beer Co.'s beers in our area & especially on how awestruck she was with the Art Deco graphics on the CANs. I have to agree. I attended CAN School with Crown Bottling during CBC last year in PHL & part of it was on the application of painted labels onto aluminum CANs. The graphics really Pop!, especially CANpared to their paper label CANterparts. I am now doing a brewery horizontal with these CANs & the spent CANs will be earmarked for Jeff Lebo's CANlection.

From the CAN: "Welcome To Miami"; "Bienvenido A Miami".

The Crack! really caught me by surprise as it was a totally brimful CAN with nowhere for the tongue to go when depressed. Naturally, I got spritzing & spurting, but it quickly settled down. I performed a gentle Glug followed by a vigorous in-glass swirl to briefly raise two fingers of soapy, foamy, bone-white head with lousy retention. Color was Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4), not really achieving Gold (SRM = 5), as evidenced by the non-presence of The Gelt Gang. Clarity was button-bright, though. Nose had a sweet maltiness, but it was kind of light & undefined. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, just a step or two above watery. The taste was kind of sugary with a light grassiness, but it was rather innocuous, in sum. Finish was semi-dry, but it was like an exercise in boredom. It could have been any light beer for all that it brought to the equation. Damned with faint praise, again.

Poured into a grip shaped goblet: color is straw, head is bright white with fine bubbles, head presents about 1/2 inch thick and dissipates to a thin top, some spots on the glass.

Smell is lemony, grassy, neutral/feint grains.

Taste is similar with light lemon, grass, neutral/muddled malt, some herbs and sharpness; i picked up some dill quality as well at one point through the tasting.

Mouthfeel is sharp, bitter, lingers with sharp presence on tongue.

Overall a beer in a style that i thought relies on more moderate/neutral hops allowing for a just bit more malty character, this leans citric in presence and flavor.
