Really top notch BA stout which delivers on the vanilla rye flavors with a full body and a slick mouthfeel. Well balanced, not as complex as some Overall, I feel this is a bit underrated.

Pours motor oily with a dark khaki head that leaves a thin ring around the edge. Smell has a nice vanilla note but it is not a vanilla bomb like the truly world class vanilla beers. Very nice barrel though with just a little bit of spice on the back end. Very strong stout front end and not much vanilla in the taste. Nicely sweet but the back end is predominated by the spicy barrel notes that kind of muddied up the nature of the beer. Admittedly, I was having this beer in a vanilla share after fo and antead vanilla so it was definitely not as balanced as the previous beers. Sticky and thick with the right amount of carbonation. Overall this beer is excellent but is just shy of the truly world class vanilla beers. It can hold its own nonetheless.

Poured a black body with good head and lace. The aroma is malty, boozy, woody. Thick, sweet body that is slow-sipping with great vanilla sweetness and an ok oaky smoothness with a boozy and dry finish. Touch of chocolate as well and overall a sweet but not cloying and enjoyable beer.

Poured into Fantome Tulip. June 2016.

Pours opaque black, tan head. Fades quickly. Very black.

Mouthfeel is sugary and oily but not quite viscous. Could be thicker.

Smell is fudge, whiskey, slight vanilla. Almost like frosting, and it smacks of a fruity English Barleywine in aroma.

Taste is HUGE dark fruits - raisin, prune, date, currants. More dried dark fruit than any beer I remember. Spicy rye, boozy burn, and some fudge and roasted malt too. Not as refined as VR, but it is in a different vein. This is intense, sweet and hot.

Overall, delicious. A little too much dark fruit; it's a raisin bomb. But absolutely and highly recommended. (Far better than the year old Madagascar we had that night, but definitely falls short of VR due to the slightly overboard dark fruits and whiskey heat which overwhelm the palate).

On tap at Wakestock. Black body. Smells of whiskey and vanilla. Oak and molasses. Tastes very sweet. Distinct rye. Lots of vanilla. Dry oak. Milk chocolate. Heavy and sweet, despite a strong oak presence. Nice, even if sluggish.

Thick, fudgey stout with just the right amount of vanilla that is in your face without being cloying. The vanilla melds with the rye whiskey character nicely. An exceptional vanilla stout.

Had the Ryevan Drago on tap a few weeks back at the Wakestock event. Pour was pitch black and opaque with mocha colored lacing. Nice thick viscosity and this beer smells like vanilla ice cream. The smell was wonderful and very vanilla forward. It's no secret this beer is Wakefield's attempt at the legendary Bourbon County Vanilla Rye '14 and while it's not the VR. It comes damn close and I wonder what a little time in the cellar will do to this barrel-aged beauty?

L: Pitch black with a head that disappears to leather colored lacing.
S: Vanilla beans
T: Reminded me more of DBJ or Nooner9, complexed with layers of vanilla, chocolate, oak, roast
F: Great, full, not thin, slightly cloying, DRAFT
O: A success, barrel-aged desert stout. I haven't opened a bottle yet though.
