i love a brewery that will confidently brew and package an esb, especially here in the states, you just dont see enough of this style, and this example of it is very well done. a nice almost light nut brown color to it, reddish, but deeper than many. the head is tall and white and lasting, the beer is perfectly clear. great malt complexion to this, a good mix of the classic english maris otter type, a more round and mild biscuit type as well, and some fine caramelization going on here, maybe some crystal malts or even an extended boil to cook it down and concentrate it up a little bit. the hop profile here is distinct but restrained, perhaps a little more hoppiness to this in general than compared to most of the imports, but it seems to be mostly old world varietals, a little grassy and bitter, but balanced in the beer by the sweeter malt flavors that last through the finish. the yeast is not quite as english tasting as some, its not flavorless, but its mild, perhaps fermented a little bit cooler. overall a very strong example of the style and one of the better american made esb types i have had in awhile.

I tried Deep Roots at the Tap room. It poured a clear amber with white head that left a spotty lace. The scent had some bitter hop. The taste was nicely balanced and not bitter at all. Smooth finish. The Mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a good beer.

Clear amber with a tinge of orange. Thick off-white head that left a curtain of lacing.
Lightly toasted nutty toffee on the nose and palate. Very mild bitterness.
Lower carbonation and a bit lighter than medium mouthfeel.
Smooth and delicious.

Poured from 22oz bomber into Simon Pearce tulip

Hazy golden color with and inch of creamy white head that quickly settles to the surface

Smells of biscuits, toffee, caramel, and pecans.

Everything is present in the taste, but less prevalent. Balanced, smooth, but the favors are somewhat subdued. Strong malt backbone.

Lightly carbonated, not overly sweet, and very drinkable.

Overall, a good representation of the style.

Pours a clear brownish amber with bubbles streaming and lacing veiling the Affligem chalice. Moderate carbonation but quite a mouth-filling sensation. Aroma of cereal and something nutty.

Flavor is nutty right from the start. It's a pleasantly musty flavor that hints of walnuts with a bite of bitter shell bits. Malty with a buttery touch. Seems like the classic ESB flavor and one of the best examples I've had. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego for $6.49.

Pours a brownish gold with a nice off-white head that fades pretty fast. Nose is very good. Cocoa and roasted malt notes with some assertive esters. Very inviting.

Mouth feel is nice medium/light carbonation but perhaps a bit "flat" in the mouth. Could use a bit more carbonation. Not as bright as one might want.

Flavors are simple bitter and true to style although simplistic.

Finish is really nice bitter malt and long lasting. Drinkable. Finish is the treat on this one.

On tap at Whole Foods in Pasadena, CA.

Pours a murky dark orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, nut, caramel, and slight metallic aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, nut, and caramel flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has a taste that is much better than the smell in my opinion.

Serving type: on tap.
