Style: Berliner Weissbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 3.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This reverse engineered, wild Berliner-style Weisse is a German-style sour that is very pale in color and is the lightest of all German wheat beers. The unique combination of wild yeast and lactic fermentation yields a beer that is acidic, lemony-tart, highly-attenuated and very light bodied. The carbonation of this Berliner-Weisse is high, and hop rates are low.

I picked up a can of Destihl's Counter Clockweisse last week for 2.79 at The Lager Mill. I tried review this beer once, but the can was defective, so lets give it another shot. Poured from a 12oz can into a imperial pint glass. 2015 Vintage.

A- The can looks nice, it has a nice simple design and it's a little eye catching. It poured a fairly clear pale yellow color that took on more of a yellow color when held to the light with a little over half a fingers worth of bubbly off white head that died down to a thin ring that quickly faded away and it didn't leave any lacing behind. This is a nice looking beer, but I wish it had better head and lacing.

S- The aroma starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with a sour aroma being the first to show up and it's followed by a big doughy aroma with a nice mixture of fruits that take on a little bit of berry like aroma. Up next comes some grainy, biscuit and [ale malt aromas with some white bread aromas coming through and little big of sour candy flavor comes through at the end. This beer has a pretty nice aroma, i have no complaints.

T- The taste seems to very similar to the aroma and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with the sourness being the first to show up and there's a a high amount of it followed by just a little bit of a berry flavor with the some big lemon flavors sticking out the most. On the finish and all through the aftertaste there's a big grainy cereal flavor that really lingers. This is a pretty nice tasting beer, but it's a little overly sour and it could use a little more complexity.

M- Not the smoothest, a little crisp, on the acidic side, on the light side of being medium bodied with a slightly higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is decent, but I wish it wasn't so acidic and had better drinkability.

Overall I thought this was a nice beer and a little above average for the style, it had pretty much all the aspects that I was looking for, but it was lacking the balance and the acidic sourness is a little too overpowering. This beer didn't have the best drinkability, one is more than enough for, it would really start to wear on me. What I like the most about this beer was the taste and aroma, they were nice and pretty true to style. What I like the least about this beer is the drinkability and balance, it's just a little too sour for me to really enjoy. I might buy this beer again and I don't think I would turn one down. I recommend trying this as long as you like really sour beers. All in all I liked this beer, but I didn't live it, it had a couple aspects that needed some work, but i still liked it. It's not a favorite beer from this brewery and it's a little above average for the style. Nice job guys, but with a little more work I think this could be a pretty good beer.

12oz can poured into a stemless wine glass.

The beer pours a very hazy lemony-straw color, pale gold hues, a thick finger of off white head appears, super fizzy but taut, which loosens and recedes to nothingness, no lace nor film. The aroma is pleasantly tart, musty pale wheat, lemon citrus, light wildflower, super basic, but balanced and refreshing. The flavors mirror the nose, plentiful grain, lots of soft wheat, pale biscuit, tart citrus, lemon rind, a bit of saltiness, not quite briney, but it helps to offset the flavors, lightly floral. The mouthfeel is nice, carbonated but not overly so, coating, zippy and crisp, dry finish.

Verdict: A nice Berliner Weissbier from Destihl, refreshing and quaffable, very enjoyable. It leans heavily on the wheat, which is a nice departure from the typical Berliner being made these days, which is overly sour and citrusy, this will make a great summer refreshment.

A slightly hazy straw gold pour produces a vigorous head that disappears with champagne-like quickness. It smells lemony tart and drinks like a highly carbonated unsweetened lemonade with a little wheat and malt character in the background to soften the edges somewhat. Counter ClockWeisse’s puckering tartness and champagne-like effervescence makes a very refreshing companion for a long afternoon.

This has got to be right at the top of the list when it comes to summer beers, golf course beers or just an all around outdoors beer. Sweet, sour, light, refreshing and delicious. Not the best berliner around but it is solidly done. At 3% abv it has plenty of flavor and a nice touch of pucker to satisfy. Put all that into a can and it's a win win situation. Go for it.

Pours a hazy, straw color with a small head that recedes slowly and leaves a small ring of lacing at the top of the glass. Aroma is acidic sourness, lemon, and lemon grass. Taste follows the aroma with a pleasant sour lemon taste and a slightly dry finish that is easy to swallow. It was a little funky, but not particularly funky. Light body and high carbonation fit the style. No aftertastes and the alcohol is dangerously absent. Even though it's only 3% ABV, it maintained the sour components to still obvious be a beer.
It was really good and very good despite it's low ABV. The low ABV is probably a good thing given how easy it is to drink this.
