I don't really like sour(ish) stouts, but this had a great feel to it.

500 ml bottle poured into a Destihl tulip.
11.64% ABV, 82 IBUs

A - Clarity through the otherwise black beer is noticeable upon the pour, foaming up a dense but rather fleeting mocha head that does a good job of leaving delicate lace clinging to the glass.

S - Heavy chocolate roasted malts conjure up morsels of bakers chocolate and charcoal chunks, both characteristics blend wonderfully with the powerful overtones of charred oak, the char coming from the heavily roasted malts. Dried out plums and notes of fig might also be one of the big malt bill's attributes but more than likely derived from the yeast as this beer finishes with a slight cognac alcohol bite.

T - The heavily roasted malt theme continues on in flavor with little holding it back; charcoal smoke wafts give way to blackstrap molasses drizzled over mounds of bitter dark chocolate and finished out with a touch of espresso. Faint alcohol pulls through the oak-rich brew on the finish.

M - Grab a spoon, this imperial stout is so full-bodied it's nearly chewy finishing with a dry bitterness that lingers on the tongue for some time after the subtle warming alcohol fades away.

O - Not a single complaint should arise from this beer not being "full-bodied enough". Rich from the impressive aromatics through the bold flavor to the thick, chewy body, this imperial stout goes one step beyond most, bringing oak and cognac nuances forward with finesse.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours pitch black, opaque in the glass with a fine half finger borwn head with great retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of sweet dark toasted malt, dark stone fruit, hint of cherry and fortified wine, licorice and chocolate. Flavor is dark toasted malt, oak tannin, char, dark dried stone fruit with a bit of tartness, milk chocolate, peppery. Long, lingering charred malt finish with residual oak tannins and hops. Nice medium body with moderate creaminess and mouth feel. A nice, rich barrel aged stout with more fruit and mild tartness than normal, but not outside of expectations from a fortified wine barrel. Tart fruit flavors are not my favorite elements for stouts and these flavors were evident in the middle taste. However, the dark fruit, malt and barrel influence were left a very pleasant finish and lingering aftertaste. The finish won me over on this one. Complex and interesting.

black body with 2 full fingers of medium brown head. Nose and flavor profile are identical. The beer leads with a sweet red grape aroma and flavor. Followed by oak in the middle and ash, roast, char, and smoke in the finish. I really wasn't a fan of the grapes, but I found the finish to be really nice. The beer has a creamy mouthfeel and has the right amount of carbonation.
