Very Good
WiLD Sour Series: Cranberry CriekWiLD Sour Series: Cranberry Criek
Notes: Our non-traditional Cranberry Criek evolved by merging tart cranberries with sweet cherries, normally associated with a traditional kriek, but in a kettle sour beer that is wonderfully intricate, balanced, fruity and tart. We then dry-hopped this crimson-colored beer for a touch of citrus aroma and flavoring, adding another layer of complexity and a perfect finish.

Pours the color of a pink zinfandel with a bubble gum colored head of 1/2 finger.

Aromas of crushed vitamins, sweet tarts, cranberry sauce, lactic acid, vomit

Extremely sour to start, then it tapers off to a milder cranberry-cherry flavor, crushed flinstone vitamins, lemon/lime powder, and then cranberry warhead dust.

Feel is very biting, high carbonation, with a high amount of chalk, stone, powder, etc.

Overall, not my thing, it's pretty extreme. The cranberry and cherry notes are there, but the rest of it I could do without.

My plans for the afternoon have fallen through, but that is okay since I have a wealth of beers in my reefer to drink & review. This one is the first of several from DESTIHL in furtherance of The CANQuest (tm) today.

From the CAN: "Our non-traditional Cranberry Criek evolved by merging tart cranberries with sweet cherries, normally associated with a traditional Kriek, but in a kettle sour beer that is wonderfully intricate, balanced, fruity and tart. We then dry-hopped this crimson-colored beer for a touch of citrus aroma and flavoring, adding another layer of complexity and a perfect finish. Cheers!"; "Support Flavor/Boycott Bland (tm)".

This sounded good from the first moment that I laid eyes on it so I began with a Crack! of the vent, followed by a slow, gentle Glug. Once decanted, an in-glass swirl raised just under three fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, pinkish head with good retention, leaving nice lacing in its wake. Color was a pinkish-Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9 or N/A). Nose was only lightly tart, but definitely smelled of both cranberries & cherries. Mmm. Mouthfeel was just barely medium, only a step or two beyond watery. The taste was mildly tart, puckering, but not so much that I would not be able to play the trumpet later. The taste was a really nice melding of tart cranberry & sweet cherries, allowing both to be perceived without getting in each others' way nor being so tart as to mar the enjoyment. This actually sounds like a great idea for pie filling - cranberries & sweet cherries! I might attempt this in the coming early-Fall. I liked the way that the taste kept going back & forth between tart & sweet, never falling into one category or the other. Finish was dry, but not so dry as to be overly puckering. This was a pleasant way to experience this style without getting overwhelmed. YMMV.

A thanks to the founding father of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a tan/violet color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of sour cranberries. Taste is very sour, light cranberry, desert dry at the finish. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a mediocre beer.

an orangey pink clear brew from the tap, the latest in this series from destihl. its a cool beer because the piquant cranberry is buzzing at the same tenor as the bacterial sourness in here, and despite it being very acidic, there is a good complexity to this and quite a lot of flavor, tons of natural cranberry, as much as i have known in a beer like this. its really tart, mouthwatering in the nose and a little harsh on the palate and in the belly, a small amount of this does me fine, but i like the flavors quite a lot, its cool they used cherries too, which here seem to compliment the cranberries and add just a little sweetness, roundness, and depth to the fruit complexion. its bacterial, lactic to be specific, and lacks some of the maturity and nuance that we would find in a more traditional lambic base, no bretty funk here hardly at all, but the acidity is very clean, allowing the fruit to really shine. its a touch thin in a feel, but i like it not being sugary and ill take it. this has me wanting a cranberry lambic from one of the classic producers. its a good idea and it works, some barrel time and some brett would be a great next step...
