Our DeadHead IPA Series melds the alluring vibe of our favorite music with unbounded takes on the hoppy beers we love to drink, unleashing a whole new groove. Funkengruven is a fusion of beer styles. We brew half the batch normally and kettle-sour the other half. Summit & Simcoe hops, along with added grapefruit, produce a funky harmony of tart, citrus flavors & aromas that'll be sure to top the charts.

Fascinating beer. Really good, too. I've only had one other brew like it, and it was similar, but absolutely awful. Not sure what the difference is, besides that this one doesn't have lactose.

L: Most of these poured out with a clumpy yeast sediment that pervaded the body of the straw yellow liquid, making it hazy, but transparent. I was gentle with this one, to see if that could be avoided, and it can. Pour the can slowly, leaving the last half ounce of liquid out of the pour, and you get a pretty normal looking sour ale, but with some body. Head was short lived and white as snow.

S: Lots of funky fruit notes, like lemon, quince, guava, plum and yellow grapefruit, followed by a creamy sweetness (does this have lactose?) The lactobacilli funk with some citrus are the the last notes to my nose.

T: Tastes less sour than it smells. All the fruit notes are present on the palate, but lighter, and less tart, balanced by the creamy sweetness of the soured malt base. Funky and lightly hoppy, with a clean citrus finish.

F: Really impressive. Light and smooth for the ABV, with a crisp finish.

O: An awesome sour IPA. The only brew I've had that meets that description.

12oz can. Poured out a clear, golden orange color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled of grapefruit, lots of grapefruit with sweet caramel. Strong grapefruit taste with hints of orange and toasted caramel.

My take on this is the that the sour comes across too strongly. I really like the idea, but the sour tastes dominates the IPA making it much more or a sour beer and very little IPA.
The aroma has a beer and more balanced mix than the flavor. The hops here are complex - earthy, a little citrus and fruit, even a little funky before the nicely blended fruit sour intermixes. Smallish head and cloudy pale yellow/gold hue.
The flavors are complex, but not balanced right for my tastes. Somewhat dry and astringency noted on the finish. Tart like grapefruit juice. A little flatter carbonation, which is fine by me. Brings some smoothness. A little funkiness (almost stinky cheese quality that was noted in aroma seems stronger in the taste. Not something I'm a fan of, but I pick up in some highly hopped drinks).
Probably like this the least of the 4 Deadhead series so far. But still worth the try and sharing with my Deadhead friends.
