Very Good
Notes: Our DeadHead IPA Series melds the alluring vibe of our favorite music with unbounded takes on the hoppy beers we love to drink, unleashing a whole new groove. Funkengruven is a fusion of beer styles. We brew half the batch normally and kettle-sour the other half. Summit & Simcoe hops, along with added grapefruit, produce a funky harmony of tart, citrus flavors & aromas that'll be sure to top the charts.

This is sort of a hybrid IPA.... a kettle sour that they have thrown hops into.... different and tasty. Lots of grapefruit presence.. this would be super refreshing by the pool. It is both crisp and tart....hidden 7.2...

Appearance: Pours a hazy, pale yellow color with a crispy, white head. SRM of 7 (3.50)

Aroma: Whoa. Aromas of grapefruit and dank herbs. All grapefruit, onion, garlic, and then marijuana. So much herbs that it creates this unique, almost artificial rubbery aroma. It smells just like you walked into a car tire store. You know what I mean. So unique. (4.25)

Flavor: Tart and sour citrus upfront. Then mixes with tons of herbs and marijuana. It's like tart grapefruit and lemon juice was poured on the dankest and wettest herbs. Not really very appealing honestly. (3.25)

Feel: Lighter-bodied. Low carbonation. Sort of watery. A mild sour astringency is left on the tongue (3.25)

Overall: I think everyone will agree that this is a weird beer. It will punch you in the face with sour lemon/grapefruit juice poured on wet and dank herbs. Doesn't really mix well. I didn't particularly enjoy the flavor of this beer, but some people may. The name of this beer Funkengruven actually describes this beer perfectly. I suppose I should have been warned. An accurately named, wild & funky, beer. This isn't your ordinary IPA folks. (Final Rating: 3.61)

Fascinating beer. Really good, too. I've only had one other brew like it, and it was similar, but absolutely awful. Not sure what the difference is, besides that this one doesn't have lactose.

L: Most of these poured out with a clumpy yeast sediment that pervaded the body of the straw yellow liquid, making it hazy, but transparent. I was gentle with this one, to see if that could be avoided, and it can. Pour the can slowly, leaving the last half ounce of liquid out of the pour, and you get a pretty normal looking sour ale, but with some body. Head was short lived and white as snow.

S: Lots of funky fruit notes, like lemon, quince, guava, plum and yellow grapefruit, followed by a creamy sweetness (does this have lactose?) The lactobacilli funk with some citrus are the the last notes to my nose.

T: Tastes less sour than it smells. All the fruit notes are present on the palate, but lighter, and less tart, balanced by the creamy sweetness of the soured malt base. Funky and lightly hoppy, with a clean citrus finish.

F: Really impressive. Light and smooth for the ABV, with a crisp finish.

O: An awesome sour IPA. The only brew I've had that meets that description.

Small pour. Hazy light yellow color with a small foamy head. Retention is minimal and lacing is good. Mild tartness on the aroma but difficult to get anything else. Maybe citrus? More citrus on the taste with moderate tartness and really no bitterness. Light bodied with mild to moderate carbonation.

Pours a hazy straw yellow. FiZy white bead fades quickly.
Nose is resin, pine.
Taste follows...sort of. Initially, a big wave of pine, citrus rind, resin. Followed quickly by a wave of tart, sharp sourness. Finish is a lingering grapefruit rind. Hops show more as the beer warms.

A- 8oz glass gets a very cloudy pale golden brew from the standard can. A one finger white cap shoots up from the beer with a puffy and silky texture and fairly good retention. Head dies out fully and lacing is not a thing with funkengruven.

S- The aroma is like a cross between supremely dank, sticky skunky weed and a grapefruit, which happen to collide with some tropical fruits. Oniony (like sour cream and onion) and just really dank. Mango, grapefruit, berry, melon and the aforementioned weed. Hints at lactic tartness but not obvious from the smell.

T- The aroma seemed a bit too hoppy considering the brew's description but wow does it open up on the palate as the sourness and grapefruit burst into the forefront. Sour grapefruit, lactic acid, melon, dank weedy and an intense sourness coat the taste buds. Like a sour grapefruit popsicle with hints of berry and a side of weed. Eventually lemon comes out with the battery acid lactic sour.

MF- A light-medium bodied brew that really puffs up on the palate with any level of agitation. Creamy and silky smooth with a high level of carbonation. Ends sour and bitter.

From appearance to aroma to taste this beer really keeps you on your toes. The hop and sour funk balance is the best on the nose but the palate brings intense sourness and the most overall depth. The grapefruit just seems a bit too intense and even a somewhat harsh on the tastebuds but honestly really nice hops meets sour meets fruit in the end.
