A beer style perhaps lost in antiquity, our rye wine closely resembles an English-style barley wine but with a spicy/peppery note from rye, this beer is dark copper in color with a full body, high residual malty sweetness, high complexity of alcohols and fruity-ester characters balanced by low bitterness and extraordinary alcohol content, some English-variety hop aroma and flavor is present, and caramel, dark toffee and vinous/sherry-like aromas and flavors dominate. Drink it now or let it age.

L:. Pours a dark red purple color with a small white head and a few fingers of lacing.

S:. Notes of caramel and toffee, a bit of light to medium hop, lots of sweet malt, don't get a lot of booze on the aroma.

T:. Sweet caramel and toffee, notes of spice from the rye and some fruity esther's. Really like this one, the booze is very unnoticeable. Always love what rye does for a beer.

F:. Smooth slick carbonation, medium body.

O:. Really nice beer, I like what the rye does to the barleywine.

Pours an effervescent orange/caramel with 3 fingers of rocky sand colored head. Stellar lacing & good head retention

S: Bourbon barrel notes, & cakeyness, some fig notes, all fade once warm to the point you get no nose almost, weird

T: Cakey, a little Bourbon sweetness, mixes with figs, raisins, a little vanilla & a little oaky dryness with just a little boozeyness. A little brown sugar sneaks in along with some Bourbon, & oakyness which also contributes dryness, along with some figgyness, plus a little booze warmth, just a little peppery rye spiceyness surfaces as well, just a smidge of brown sugar & cinnamon. Finishes with nice Bourbon sweetness, figgyness, oaky dryness

MF: Fairly chewy, subtle carbonation, warming

Lovely beer, well put-together take on the style, wish the nose would've held up, only flaw with this gem

500 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 10/22/2015. Pours crystal clear deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of huge caramel, toffee, molasses, dark bread, spicy rye, toasted oak, vanilla, raisin, plum, fig, date, apple, herbal, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/rye malt, fruity yeast, oak, and moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge caramel, toffee, molasses, dark bread, spicy rye, toasted oak, vanilla, raisin, plum, fig, date, apple, herbal, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Moderate herbal hop bitterness and rye/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, molasses, dark bread, spicy rye, toasted oak, vanilla, raisin, plum, fig, date, apple, herbal, pepper, and oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/rye malt, fruity yeast, oak, and moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/spice/bitterness balance; with a slight hop/oak astringency on the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitter/spiciness that increases through the glass. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/sticky, and lightly slick balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent rye English barleywine style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/rye malt, fruity yeast, oak, and moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the huge ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

500 ml bottle, no bottled date. My first bottled beer from Destihl Brewery, and my first offering from them that isn't part of their Wild Sour series. 'Rye Wine-Style Ale, aged with oak spirals' per the label. Intriguing bottle artwork. Not entirely sure what to expect with this one.

Poured into a Big Eddy snifter glass.

A - A dark ruby mahogany pour, thick and creamy with over two fingers of frothy tan head that leaves tons of fluffy sticky lacing behind. Appears adequately carbonated. Looks excellent.

S - A thick, creamy, earthy, woodsy, caramel / toffee drenched aroma. Subtle notes of nail polish remover booze fumes. Mild medicinal cherry notes.

T - Thick, creamy, syrupy, earthy, woodsy. Big notes of candied caramel & toffee. Very delicious stuff. Subtle notes of pepper / clove spiciness imparted from the rye. Very nicely balanced and well built stuff. Super complex and flavorful. Big notes of caramel, toffee, oak, wood, & earth. Subtle spice & booze warmth.

M - Feel is smooth, thick, & creamy. Full-bodied, with good carbonation. Easy-drinking stuff especially for the high abv. Doesn't feel nearly as boozy as it actually is.

Overall, very complex and delicious stuff from Destihl. Like the bottle says, suitable for drinking now, and very suitable for aging. My first 'rye wine' style ale, and I have to say it did not disappoint. Highly recommended stuff if you are able to get it!

Pours a dark mahogany, minimal carb, head, lacing. Very malty nose, slight oak and alcohol scents. The rye spice is up front, smooth caramel malt in the middle, slight tang (not strong enough to call a burn) on the back end. The 12.1% is disguised very well. Pretty good, but nothing I'd repeat buy.

RYE! 500ML bottle, in hopes of washing the last beer’s taste out of my mouth & memory. Plus, I’ve heard rye is good.

The pour is a nice clear copper kettle with only a ring of oversized bubbles. I have to dig a couple fathoms down to find any aroma: touch of rye, sweetness, caramel. But not much of anything.

Antiquity should be sponsored by a dark rye bread company. As expected there are huge rye notes: rye bread crust, light rye spiciness, earthy rye. Once the rye Normandy is past, there is rich toffee, a Maytag dryer of oak, residual sugars, light alcohol nip. Dry & sharp. Tasty enough that a pint of this wouldn’t be difficult to take down.

Lovers of rye will like this. It doesn’t quite break the glass ceiling into my upper echelon, but it’s a very good brew.
