2013 batch 500 mL poured to tulip, barrel numbers 25-27 and 35-36. Label says 7.2% rather than the ? listed here.

Pours a deep, clear red-brown. Tidy one finger tan head settles to a light ring, totally appropo for the style.

Smell is an interesting earthy mix of wood, hay, sweet fruit, and yeast

Flavor is fairly dry, notes of prune, berry, sour cherry, musty wood, bourbon, a creeping sweetness mid palate and mild sourness on the back with a slight hint of phenolic "bandaid"

Mouthfeel is slightly astringent medium body

Very interesting, complex take on the style that hits many classic flavor notes. Drier than some, not as sour as others, it carves out a nice middle ground. Surprising amount of wood and bourbon-esque flavor set it apart in the style, the lurking bandaid note is the only complaint, and that is only a mild hint. Great stuff, wish I had grabbed more of it as it is gone now.

Appears a hazy dark russet toned rusty crimson with a small, bubbly white cap that quickly fades into a tiny collar. Little speckles of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of cherries, vanilla, rhubarb, cream, and fruity hard candies.
Taste is of the aromas with a wonderful flavor of cherry pie and a small acidic addition found in the swallow.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, tart, mild CO2, puckering but balanced and addictive.

2013 bottling

Appearance: Pours clear and tea colored with a thin head; a spattering of lace emerges

Smell: Very oaky, with leather and plum tones; the Bourbon is not pronounced but is detectable

Taste: Acetic, from the outset, with the leather and plum flavors building; funky and oaky, through the middle; hints of Bourbon emerge, in the middle, but the finish is somewhat dry and somewhat tart

Mouthfeel: Medium body with low to moderate carbonation

Overall: Brewed in 2013 and well on its way out the door

2013 bottle pours an effervescent crmsin with a thumb of rapidly falling tan head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Some sourness, raisins, dark fruits

T: Tart & sweet dark cherry, spme leathery & oaky dryness up front along with restrained acidity. Sour cherry & a little fig as this warms, along with dryness, even a little li-hing-mui. Finishes with much dryness, oakyness & leather together, also a little sour plum & cherry

MF: Medium body, subtle carbonation

Complex beer, not a easy-drinker, but true to style

Dark ruby red in color with lots of minuscule carbonation bubbles erupting from within. There's a fingernail of beige around half of the rim. The aroma is of horse blanket and cabernet. I'm tasting cabernet and brettanomyces. The mouth is highly carbonated and very dry.

A - Poured a cloudy, burgundy color with a one-finger, off-white head of foam. It left some sudsy trails of lace.

S - It smelled of cherry and sour green apples.

T - Great sour flavor with black cherry and green apple flavors. There was a touch of caramel and not much else.

M - It was crisp with a puckering sharpness. A medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - This is a very good sour ale. I really enjoyed this ale.

On tap at the Great Taste 2010

Pours a tan head. Color is a murky brown. Not the most appealing sour.

Aroma/Taste: Sour cherries, funk, tartness. It has a bit of medicinal flavors. Light oak flavors. The funk is very bretty.

Mouthfeel: Tart and funky. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends with a medicinal flavor.

Overall, this was a decent sour, but I am beginning to release a lot of these sour browns/reds have a lot of similar flavors. They taste good, but they are becoming over populated. Decent drinkability.

Had this one twice as of late. 1st time 22oz bottle of the 2010 version for GABF (thanks, Kan!) and the 2nd time on-tap at the source. I'm going to review the 2010 version, since I enjoyed it much more.

A - Pours a ruby red color, mirky, some bubbles here and there, thin collar, off-white head.

S - A mix of sweet malts, lactic sour, slight tart, caramel, and a smokey/roast note that really took me by surprise. Not overly sharp and a nice balance.

T - The smoke, roast, lactic sour, and malts work decently well together. I'm not totally in love with this take on an Oud Bruin, but it's not too bad. Some tart cherries in there as well mixed with some leather. The smokey notes are so odd with the style, but I kinda like it.

M - Medium, light carbonation, tart dry finish.

O - An odd take on the style, but it kinda works for me. The 2011 version I had on-tap was quite different to the bottle and less enjoyable.
