Notes: A classic German-style Hefeweizen with fruity aromas and flavors of banana, clove and vanilla and a fuller mouth feel with appropriate yeast haze.

Pours a hazy amber color with a fizzy white head that blooms extravagantly before disappearing completely--not quite the retention I’m used to in a hefeweizen. Mild aroma smells of wheat, lemon rind, and a gentle, lactic sourness.

The taste is more in line with traditional expectations, featuring wheat, banana, and clove primarily. Bready malt and rumors of bubblegum are also discernible. Medium body and high carbonation make for a crisp and refreshing mouthfeel.

Overall, this is a solid but unremarkable hefeweizen. The flavors are there, but the presentation leaves something to be desired, which wouldn’t be such a downer if we were talking about another style. A hefeweizen just isn’t the same without an omnipresent mound of silky froth, though.

Here's the thing, I like Franziskaner, it is my measuring stick for Hefes. A few Germans have come close, and as I haven't had a chance to try Live Oak's Hefe yet, none of the American Hefes I've tried have lived up to what I look for. Time after time I find something with too much hops, very little banana and clove, or just a weird spice that I can't identify.

Destihl makes that not true anymore. I wouldn't say in the giant world of wheat beers this is a standout. To ME, a Franziskaner lover who is looking for something made in the US that is even close, this stuff is top notch.

Trust me, if you're a "Americans can't make hefes correctly" person like me and this is available, give it a whirl.

Pours a hazy light Amber color. Aroma reminds me of banana nut crunch cereal. Flavor is similar to the nose with a semi sweet malty finish. Drinks pretty smooth and overall this is solid but nothing special. If the flavor didn't remind me of breakfast as a kid I probably wouldn't like this very much.

Weissenheimer pours to a large pebbly white head on a hazy, effervescent pale-gold body; head retention is modest and lacing is very scant, consisting of a few very strangely-angled hieroglyphs. The nose is medium in intensity; it is yeast-forward with hints of banana/clove spice, a modest citrus character and a bit of wheat. The ester notes that are lacking on the nose hit up front on the palate, impressively so, but quickly fade, ceding dominance to a tartish citrus flavor shot through with faint veins of caramel apple, all over a largely-obscured, muddy wheat foundation. The finish is a fair hit of tart caramel; the linger is a tart apple flavor that lasts for a few minutes. Mouthfeel is on point for the light body, and is, surprisingly, slightly astringent; the texture is medium-creamy and quite peppery from the slightly overenthusiastic carbonation. DESTIHL Weissenheimer, 5.2% ABV. Pours pale yellow, with a one finger white head which dissipated quickly leaving no lacing. Nose is bananas and cloves, taste follows with a slight sweetness and no bitterness. Excellent mouthfeel, overall outstanding.

Quick Take: Nice opaque straw color with a subtle splotch of banana, along with some clove that disappears in the aftertaste. It is unusually crisp for a hefeweizen, with a clear, refreshing mouthfeel. Light Italian bread aroma, also very mild lemon. This is a solid above average hefeweizen, although I highly recommend Karl Strauss’ Hefeweizen and La Cumbre Brewing’s A Slice of Hefen. Those two beers are a benchmark for hefeweizens outside of Germany!
