Capital Brewery Dark Voyage Black IPA

Tasting notes originally from 2/13/14. Had this on tap at the Nitty Gritty. This was served chilled in a shaker pint glass.

A) The lighting in the bar wasn't ideal, but this appeared to be a dark brown with a finger of frothy light tan head. Nice retention... Not much lacing.

S) Heavy dose of roast... Some light pine. A bit herbal/earthy...

T) Mostly roasted malt. Distant chocolate, and light pine. All the toasted malt kind of dominates the flavor.

M) Medium body with no carbonation issues. Pretty smooth... Goes down easy enough from a mouthfeel perspective. Okay aftertaste...

O) This was okay... Less roast and more hops would be about the simplest way to describe how I felt. Black Top from New Glarus is a much better representation of this style in my opinion.

I have had this beer at the Brewery on tap and it was very good (4.5). At that time they were still working on the IBU's . I then picked up a six pack of bottles at a local (Madison WI) store, the taste was near as good 3.5. I had hoped this was because they still working on it. I was going to look for it again this December and see if the bottles improved.

Maybe I'm being nit-picky, but the bottle I had wasn't as well-balanced as other black IPAs I've tried, such as Lena Brewery's Scrap Iron Black IPA....seemed overly heavy on the porter/stout malt flavor and not as hoppy/citrusy as I'd hoped. Still a very drinkable beer.

Just an IPA, the "black" not such a big deal

Very dark brown with noticeable sediment, thick creamy brown head. Smell has light roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and caramel notes. Hint of citrusy hops. Taste is stronger than expected from the smell, heavy on the roasted malts, toasted coffee, and chocolate. Decently bitter, but more of a dark chocolate/coffee bitterness than hops. Citrusy hops are more apparent on the clean finish. Goes down smooth. Medium body and carbonation. Great flavors, but a bit to much coffee/chocolate for my taste.
