Fishin' In The DarkFishin' In The Dark
Notes: Fishin’ in the Dark is a testament to the ingenuity and youth of modern Independent brewing. This Platinum award-winner is one of Brewmaster Ashley Kinart’s first creations, and was an overnight crowd favorite. A darker nod to a traditional pilsner, this Imperial Schwarzbier is brewed with smoked malts, creating a powerful experience for the drinker. Yet, it is disarmingly light in body with a crisp, refreshing flavor.

I started drinking this one rather warm from the start since my refrigerators are all full.
Look:, ok nothing special
Smell: Smells like a double bock, brown sugar, roast, molasses?
taste: smooth and slightly sweet. roasted malt, molasses, brown sugar, has a little bit of a dunkel flavor, maybe even some dark fruit. hint of smoke. some dry chocolate comes thru towards the finish. No Coffee notes.
fell: it's good but not great

I dig it, A stealthy summer doppel bock , what more could I ask for. I don't care for the new label /packaging design

Pours a luxurious dark brown in color -- black to the naked eye. Topped with a silky-smooth darker tan head, comprised of small, uniform bubbles. Head drops after a good couple of minutes and leaves plenty of sticky lacing behind. GREAT first impression.

The nose is rich and malty-sweet, and reminds me very much of an American porter, minus the new-school take on hopping, of course. Midnight Wheat? I wonder... Lightly tannic/tanginess to the nose, also, and definitely smells a bit more ale-like than lager-like. Fruity and full of dark fruit notes: Bing cherry and plum.

Bold and expressive on the first sip, with BIG cocoa notes. Coats the palate and really gets a good first impression going (or second, I guess.) Lightly-bitter, and with notes of a precious dry, biscuit malt co-mingling with the cocoa. No coffee or espresso notes here, and I am okay with that, as I had been told that it was an experimental or hybrid take on Schwarzbier (an 'Imperial Schwarzbier' of sorts.)

Come to think of it, this does reminds me a little of Sprecher's very good flagship 'Black Bavarian' lager, but gussied up, stronger, while at the same time slightly lighter in body.

A.B.V. on bottle states 7.5%, and that seems right for this one. Reminds me a little of some of the Imperial Porters which have been around for a while now ("Gonzo"), but just a touch mellower.

Seems to me that this would make for a good dessert beer, and maybe even one to pair with a sweeter biscuit or a cake course. Ultimately, this isn't bad at all, and that's a good thing as it's the first new beer from Capital that I've had in years, and they are getting hard to find in my neck of the woods...

Aroma is a little coffee and cocoa, but flavor is fairly bland - just s small amounts of sweet and roast. Ok beer.

Appearance - Dark brown with a little red. Appears clear. Fairly tall light brown head, good retention.

Smell - Medium roasted malts. Sweet - mainly toffee and raisin.

Taste - Quite rich. Sweet roasted malts. Lots of caramel, toffee, raisin. Hint of coffee

Mouthfeel - Medium. Smooth.

Overall - Rich roasted malt flavor with a lighter than expected body. Not bad.

Pours very dark brown with a thin, disappearing head. Spotted lacing.

The smell is of restrained roast, dark malt, some anise.

The taste is of sweet-ish roasted dark malt. A fruitiness that is between grape and raisin is present. Licorice and slightly earthy hop touch in the finish. Some alcohol shows.

Solvent alcohol makes it slick. Slightly astringent for a lager.

Not the smoothest lager. Not sure that making this an imperial without more malt backbone did this any good. Also, it had some ale character that didn't go well with it. It's not a complete disaster, but a brewery that specializes in lagers could have done better.

Pours a dense, soapy, tan head that has nice persistence and laces well. Acidic, roasted malt aroma. Black. Starts with a nice acidity and a deep, roasted malt flavor. Coffee. A medium bitterness that is slightly floral. Finish is roasted malt, acidity, and floral hoppiness.

This is really, really nice. It has a great mouthfeel and is very toasty and delicious.

Fishin in the dark pours a black color with a very small but lacing head. Nice full spicy meaty aroma. The taste is very full, big smokey malt flavors, with a hint of smoke and meat. Good full flavors, good body. Overall its a very full and complete flavors.

Gross. Described as an Imperial Schwartzbier, nothing imperial about it. Taste is way off on this.
