Styled after a traditional European Dunkel lager with dark caramel malt flavor with smooth dry finish. One of our Original Brau beers, Capital Dark is our most award winning beer and still remains an all-time favorite.

Clear walnut with red highlights. Fine beige head settles very slowly to an incomplete cap and leaves nice lacing.

Yeasty brown bread notes dominate the nose. Support is provided by a hint of herbal German hop, and slight mineral notes. Really nice stuff.

Medium light in body. Palate is slightly dusty malt, with a nice backbone of hop bitterness keeping it in check. As it warms there are hints of cocoa as well. The hops come to the fore on the surprisingly long finish where they mix with a relatively strong mineral note.

Mouthfeel is frankly ordinary. Drinkablility is very high. It's interesting and quite sessionable. If this was available in these parts it would be a regular for me for sure.

Bottle reads '0440 SP'; consumed on 3/31/21

Pours a barely translucent burnt mahogany body capped with a finger of fluffy, beige foam; decent head retention leaves a thin layer of frothy cap, a moderate, creamy collar, and firm strands of webby, occasionally spotty lacing clinging to the walls of the glass.

Aroma shows a mild roast and touch of smoky depth melding with soft plum upfront before bittersweet chocolate and baked green apple veer towards a caramel apple peak; sweet toffee, burnt butterscotch, and toasted brown bread bring a deepening sweetness to the back end and close of the bouquet.

Taste opens with touches of charry caramel, toffee, and a wisp of smoke cut with a developing apple peel and distant fig in the backdrop across the mid-palate; bread crust refines a mild earthiness to a back end highlighting milk chocolate, chocolate malts, and a slightly smoky, surprisingly robust roast lingering through the finish.

Mouthfeel brings a light-medium body and prickly, moderate carbonation dissipating to initially crisp textures before wavering into the back end, remaining moderately dry as a slight roasty grit is maintained through the finish.

A firm complexion of pillowy orchard fruits and a steadying roast is consistent yet fails to come entirely into focus, resulting in a quenching offering on the lighter side of both flavor and body for the style; while not memorable, it is satisfying in a vague sense, leaving you wanting just a bit more.

This one was a surprise. I bought a six, remembering that I liked it. My tastes must have changed, or the recipe did. The beer looks the color of iced cola with the ice melted. The 3/4" beige head rapidly dissipated. In the glass, the scent was predominantly citrus, though it was fairly faint overall. The taste followed the smell.... citrusy but almost nonexistent. The feel was middling, neither watery nor syrupy, though the burn at the end broke up any smoothness that might have been there. This would probably be a fine beer for warmer times; it just doesn't have the body and hardiness (read: toasty malt) that I expect from something labeled dark and that I thought used to.

A- Reddish-brown with a thin beige head. Very little lacing.

S- Toasted malt, clean.

T- Toasted malt and bread crust. A nice, clean and slightly dry finish makes you want to take another sip.

M- Easy drinking, light mouthfeel with pleasant tongue cleaning carbonation.

O- Toasty, clean, and well-lagered. The carbonation and well attenuated nature of this beer makes it a great addition to almost any rich meal.
