Notes: 2014 GABF Gold Medal (German-Style Marzen)

The mother of all seasonal beers has a fiery amber hue with rich malty overtones that dominate the flavor.

Strong, spicy sweet bread aroma. Clear to slightly hazy amber, moderately carbonated, tall, thick, creamy off-white head. Smooth and creamy feel. Spice and bread in the initial taste, caramel that is slightly sweet. Moderately bitter in the middle and finish. Finish is a bit sticky. A very nicely done American Märzen.

Bright amber body topped with tiny, creamy head. Some lacing, though.

The aroma is very bready - probably moreso than any beer I've tried yet. Some maltiness as well.

The taste has some yeasty notes and some maltiness, but mostly it's not there. A little sweetness comes through but overall it's just too watery.

The feel is fine, not very thick but with some body and plenty of carbonation.

It drinks fine, the alcohol doesn't make itself known. The problem is that there really isn't enough flavor to cause me to pick it up again.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of off white head which settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A toasty and bready malt forward aroma with a scent of biscuit, grains, and caramel. Upfront scent of toasted barley malt with hints of grains, biscuit, caramel, cracker, and yeast. Subtle hints of grassy hops. A decent malty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a bready and toasty malt forward aroma with notes of biscuit, grains, and caramel. Bready malt notes of biscuit, grains, cracker, caramel, and yeast. Backing notes of grassy hops. A decent malt driven taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp, clean, and smooth.

Overall: A decent take on an Oktoberfest. Solid biscuit malt flavor.

Poured out of 12 oz bottle into a pint glass

A) Clean copper color. A quarter inch of head at best. No retention and no lacing.

S) Malt and some sweetness. Smells like caramel to me. It smells fine, I just didn't pick up much else with my sniffer.

T) Nice malt character, with sweetness. Pretty similar to the nose. The finish is earthy, slight grass, fairly smooth.

M) A medium/light body with moderate carbonation. Decent finish and a decent aftertaste.

O) A pretty solid Marzen offering. It's worth an Autumn tasting.

Bready aromas with a little hops. Pours brilliant orange gold under a very finely bubbled 1” white foam cap. Bread and malt seasoned with kettle sugars and traces of malt spice season the palate. Medium body and medium carbonation.

Its Fanatsy Draft and the Oktober Fest beers are in full force. The capital brewery oktoberfest is is a good beer!!!! The appearance is a rich copper/amber. Very thin head...if any that is not lacing. The smell has some sweet maltiness to it, the tast definitely has a sweetness. The mouthfeel is very smoot and easily could be sessioned. Certainly worth a try for all those Okto fans.

Had several of these on draft at the Capital Brewery and it was delicious! One of the smoothest and most drinkable Octoberfest beers I have ever drank! Classic amber look with just the right amount of spice, with a smooth mouth feel and finish. Great offering too bad can't get it here in Virginia

Okay, so I like this beer (and most offerings from Capital) BUT do you ever think that most Capital beers taste about the same? I realize I am not a top notch beer taste tester but it seems like this was almost the same beer as their Summerfest and it wasn't much different than their Winter Skal which I had right after finishing an Oktoberfest. I guess if I really had to discriminate, this one was a little bit heavier and spicier than the Summerfest.

A: A nice amber color with visible carbonation floating delicately to the top. No head was produced.

S: Not much here. Just a slight hop aroma.

T: Again, slight hops and malt with a grassy finish.

M: Thin and lots of carbonation on the tongue.

O: This is an okay beer. Nothing spectacular but worth trying.

Starting to see more O-Fests popping up on menus, so I might as well dive right in.

A. Pours a mellow brass with a small white head.

S. Dry toasted grain, a bit of caramel sweetness and some mild rindish hoppiness.

T. Caramelized grain, nutty, light leafy/citric hoppy note, bready and dry in the finish.

M. Light-bodied with some heft from the carbonation.

O. An enjoyable American marzen; nothing spectacular, but dry enough with some good hop/malt balance to warrant praise.
