I had no idea what Yuzu was, but based on this beer, I think I like it. Strong and unique citrus aroma. The taste is dominated by citrus as well, somewhat ripe and sour. Toasted malts and I think some citrusy hops, but hard to separate from the Yuzu. I find most citrus infused beers to be a little cloying, but not this one, with its refreshing, semi-dry finish. Very pleasantly surprised.

On tap at the Pig & Fiddle.
L: Pours brilliant gold under a thin, ¼” white foam collar that does not leave much lace.
S: Some light graininess but not much aroma.
T: Has a fairly fruity palate with light stone fruits and citrus with a bitter hop accent on the finish. There is a light malty sweetness but the overall impression is dry.
F: Medium light body and medium high carbonation. A light carbonic bite on the finish.
O: A good serviceable American Pale Ale.

Poured from a 16 oz. can into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours copper orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Slight finger of off white head that settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A pretty juicy Pale Ale aroma with a scent of citrus fruits and grains. Upfront Yuzu presence with citrus fruit hints of orange peel, grapefruit, and lemon. Some earthy hop hints. Pale malt with hints of grains, caramel, cracker, and yeast. A solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy and bitter taste with notes of citrus fruit and grains. Good Yuzu presence with citrus fruit notes of grapefruit, orange peel, and lemon zest. Mild grassy hop notes. Pale malt with notes of caramel, grains, cracker, and yeast. A solid juicy taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy and very drying on the finish.

Overall: A pretty decent spin on an American Pale Ale. Nice zesty citrus notes from the Yuzu.

Grabbed a can at Princeton Liquors in Maple Grove. It's a fruit forward pale ale with the yuzu giving it a sweet, bright citrus punch taste that's balanced by orange rind hops in the finish. I'd call it a fruit beer, but it's a good example for that style.

A: Golden blonde hue with a very slight haze, moderate carbonation, and a thin white head. Served in a Cardinal Arcoroc pint glass.
S: Some citrus hop aroma and slight malt character.
T: I have never had anything quite like it. A very crisp and refreshing pale ale that delivers some citrus and some floral notes. The Yuzu spice adds a unique and curious flavor that's hard to describe. A neutral beer on the sweet/dry scale. Nice slightly bitter finish.
M: Malt provides a slightly bready feel and mild to moderate carbonation.
O: Pleasant, flavorful, citrusy and a unique taste that I enjoy. When I tasted it, I thought this could be a beer that Dogfish Head sells. Certainly not a run-of-the-mill pale ale.

No canning date.

Appearance: Semi-transparent caramel/orange with a thin off-white head.

Aroma: Vibrant mandarin orange, which I'm sure is the yuzu coming through. Hint of caramel.

Taste: The yuzu really stands out and pairs well with the style. It tastes very similar to mandarin and blood orange. The hop bitterness does a good job of balancing the otherwise sweet, almost soda-like flavor from the yuzu. Although this might sound a lot like a fruit beer, it is definitely more in the pale/IPA range with its bold flavors. It actually tastes like a good version of a lot of bad citrusy IPAs that litter the shelves these days. Mild finish with an aftertaste that starts sweet and turns to ebbing bitterness. A lot of good flavor for a mere 5.5% ABV.

Mouthfeel: Just below medium in body with average carbonation for the style while feeling a bit like syrupy mountain dew, which works here. Good drinkability.

Final Thoughts: I haven't tried this particular offering from Insight since their taproom opened, at that time it was called Yuzu Pale Ale (nice job with the rebrand, although a little heavy handed with the chapter numbers). When I first tried it the flavor was nothing like it is today, it has hugely improved and really delivered the yuzu character in all aspects. Would I drink it again? Yes.
