L: pours bright, deep dark brown with a thin wisp of light tan foam

S: smells of bourbon, coffee and chocolate with traces of vanilla and oak with some dark dried fruit

T: The flavors start mildly sweet with rich chocolate and coffee flavors balanced by bourbon

F: medium full bodied with low carbonation and mild alcohol warming

O: I am enjoying this beer for the nice sweet bourbony malt nose and the balance between imperial stout and bourbon flavors.

3.74 original rating for the 2015 reserve.

2016 reserve on tap. No head. Black in color. Brown around the edges.

Roasted malts and lots of bourbon. Molasses. Some char. Oak. Chocolate.

Big barrel. Full bodied. Thicker than last year. Really solid.

750ML copper-waxed bottle picked up at the release in November. Let’s see if these bourbon barrels turned the base beer into something more pleasing.

Wax is about a six on the max12 annoyance scale. The pour is black & ribald, but quiets quickly. The nose has that trademark over-charred roast & only a trifling of bourbon.

Gravity Well - Bourbon Barrel Aged has Mount St. Helens ash in its lineage somewhere. The roast has been worked over with a flame-thrower, hot lava, a propane torch, & probably exposed to Milana Vayntrub’s mid-section. ‘Char’ is descriptive but inadequate. Mixed into the ash bake is light sweetness, mild vanilla, hefty dryness, dark chocolate - these pleasantries save the beer from the drain & serve to mask the base beer somewhat. Bourbon? The search party heard a few echoes, but they’re still in the field. Half of half the bomber would have been sufficient.

I had the Double Barrel Gravity Well at a tasting early last year & thought it was excellent. Unfortunately, history did not repeat itself. None of the three November releases were remotely worth $20/bottle, & from my vantage point it looks like Insight needs to work on the consistency of the base beer. This one? Decent enough.
