A very bitter IPA is the expression here.

From a 16oz can:

Appearance: Clear amber, good head.

Smell: Slight citrus, low aroma on this one.

Taste: Bitter start, piney hops, moderate body. Has some caramel sweetness underneath. Finishes bitter.

Overall: West is a decent representative of the west coast style IPA. Quite a bit of bitterness with some caramel maltiness giving some body. Worth a try.

L-Amber colored

S-Pine, spruce tips,toffee like malt

T-A lot of pine..tobacco.....spruce tips....toffee like malt...a bit of pink grapefruit as well.

F-Medium bodied....good dose of bitterness....maybe a little thin feeling on the finish.

O-Kind of a cross between an English IPA and piney west coast style IPA... It's solid enough if not memorable.

amber and reasonably clear. soapy lacing.

very piney hops nose and taste. pretty mild overall but with a lingering bitterness.

decent carbonation. very bitter aftertaste.

this is not better than the east, but that's not saying much. just straight up hops bitter with nothing to make me want to go back for more.

overall, i love the idea of a 4-pack with an us vs them theme, but i really wasn't impressed with either.

West pours a bronze color with a big long lasting, and lacing head. Balanced aroma, with a strong hop presence. Flavor has a rich and sweet malty backbone, with a good strong earthy hop flavor. Good body and flavors. Overall, a very well put together IPA, nice underlying sweetness with bitterness near the end.

Citrus and pine/resin aroma. Tall off-white head. Amber color, light carbonation visible. As expected mouth feel, not much from the carbonation. Taste pine/resin with citrus, quite bitter all the way through. Nicely done west-coast style IPA. Enjoyable and definitely worth buying.

This beer pours a deep amber with a large head. The aroma is lead by pine, grapefruit, tangerine, mango, and caramel. The flavor. The flavor start off sweet, with overripe mango, candied malt, caramel, and peach, then finishing very bitter with pine and grapefruit pith. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with sharp carbonation. Overall this is a really solid beer - the sweet bitter contrast is really solid here, and the flavors are great.

Look: Pours a clear Amber, with an odd white head of a inch or show appearing up top. Carbonation streams from the bottom. This looks like an old school west coast IPA.

Smell: Pine, resin and malt is what I pick up. Swirling gives more of the same.

Taste: About what I expected from the nose, but with more hops dominant than malt. There is a nice grapefruit element going on, caramel toffee, and the resin. This delivers what it promises, a west coast IPA.

Feel: medium full bodied, almost syrupy. There's a good amount of bitterness throughout, and the finish is fairly dry.

Overall: not a style I aim to grab much nowadays, but Defending from the West delivers to a tee for the style.

Love the concept: east vs. west IPAs, two cans each in a four pack. This is for my first love, west coast, 16 oz. can, dated 3/1/17, the reddish orange one.

The pour is pure copper wire, light & sharp, no coating. Compared to the east, this is weak up the schnazz. Malt, light pine, not much to inhale.

Defending the West doesn’t do the grand old dames of Western Civilization justice. Tons of caramel malt with the bitterness of ground aspirin caught in the teeth; borderline unpleasant. Light pine & nice resinous feel, but glad I’m splitting this can with my wife.

To call this a ‘west coast IPA’ does the sub-genre a disservice. Alpine or Russian River or Rip Current would kick this to the curb, then call a disposal service. Not very good.

This beer pours a semi-clear amber color. The head is an inch in height, and recedes slowly into a nice cap of foam. Lacing is also nice. The aroma is of grapefruit with some light pine resin. The taste is more of the same, but with a sharp bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with fairly aggressive carbonation. Overall, this is a decent beer. I'd drink it, and not complain. I probably wouldn't buy it again though.

Flavor profile of pine, grapefruit and light tropical notes. Very bitter finish. Aroma is somewhat mild. Has similarities to SN Torpedo, but not as good. In the Insight battle of East vs West, East won by a wide margin.

East VS West from Insight East win 4 sure

Pours a clear dark golden color with a fresh white head. Smell is malts 1st with dank garden hops. Taste is dank with citrus and grapefruit, a touch of pine and a load of caramel malts. Mouth feel is like an Imperial red Ale very malty and sweet with bitter hops in the finish, this IPA is home to neither coast it is a Third coast IPA, and not one i would buy again.

Nice pillowy white head, retains for awhile. Amber-ish color, definitely some malt presence to this. Taste is piney and resin-like, but I can taste the malts too. Smell is similar. Nice beer, but not totally a west coast one.

Eggshell white head. Lace left. Copper color.

This seems almost more of a midwest IPA than a west cost. It is somewhat dank and resiny. Grapefruit citrus. Floral hops. Bitter and sticky. However, it has a bit more of a malt backbone to it than typical west coast IPAs. Hence, midwest.

Either way, it was a fun beer to try! Pretty easy drinking.
