On tap at Braven/Newport

Continuing on with the RI brewery journey for the night, my last stop is Braven, which is technically inside and of Newport which I’ve had before, so I had to go with this one. Let’s see what Bushwick tastes like

Pours a pale yellow with 2 fingers of white head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves decent lacing

The nose is nicely spicy here, bright and vibrant. I’m picking up on aromas of peppery hops, honey, crackery malt, orange zest, toasted grain, and light lemon

It loses a bit of potency in taste, it’s a bit sweeter and not as good. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting doughy malt, honey, orange zest, and light floral hops. The swallow brings notes of of lemon zest, bready malt, orange zest, pear skin, peppery hops, and light honey

A medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a slick beer. Finishes slightly sticky and sweet

It’s nothing amazing but it’s pretty solid. I’d try more of their stuff

Braven says this brew is ballpark-ready, so that's where I had it, at Citi Field. Gold-colored pour, not exactly clear, with a bubbly white head. I was hoping for a Czech or German style pilsner, but that's not Bushwick's jam. This pilsner is more reminiscent of the old time NYC pilsners, like Kreuger's. It's bready, grassy, but tastes like Budweiser mass-produced, pre-craft boredom. Did they use any Pilsner malt in this at all? There was no Pilsner flavor--could have been a straight-up lager. Feel free to pass this one up.

Cloudy golden body with a white cap. Grassy hops atop a base of white bread and grain make up the simple yet streamlined nose. Taste has the bread and grain up front but malt presence and light esters prevail before considerable grassy and somewhat floral hop finish. Not the cleanest tasting but enjoyable. Feel is highly carbonated, dries slight through the sip, almost pale in a sense as it warms, and light. It's a solid pils

Pours a clear yellow color, light visibly carbonation, and a modest head that quickly dissipates.
Aroma of bready Pilsner malt, mostly clean. There is a light hops aroma of lemon and spice.
Flavors of dry Pilsner malt, cracker like and bready. It is strongly hopped with spicy and lemony flavors and a rather astringent bitterness in the finish. The yeast presence is peppery.
Light bodied, crisp and with a moderate carbonation. The finish is dry with a lingering bitterness.
As mentioned, it felt a bit astringent, which detracted from enjoying the malt. I’m afraid this one kind of missed the mark for me.

Just sampled this one from a variety pack from the new Total Wine store that opened up on Long Island. Good-lookin' brew with golden hue and a nice white cap. Pleasant herbal aroma and nice smooth crisp flavor blend of malt and hops. Finish is dry and clean. Right amount of carbonation and this one is a winner....I will be buying more!

Very attractive clear gold color with white cap.

Pleasing aroma of herbal, spicy hops on a sweet malt base. Touch of caramel scent in the malt.

Flavor is just about equal parts malt and hops on entry. Sounds simple but this is a case where the sum of the parts equal a greater whole. What I'm saying is hops retain their spicy, herbal nature while the malt emerges in almost bold fashion showing both richness and depth without cloying sweetness or leading to an out of balance beer. Kind of a Romeo-Juliette thing going on between malt and hops in that each shine yet meld into a complete whole. Even in the aftertaste both play equally.

Medium full texture with balancing carbonation.

Well designed, well made, as approachable as a small town politician.

First off, this beer is miscategorised-- it should probably be listed under American Pale or Adjunct Lager, given that the recipe (which I had to do a lot of Google-Fu to find, but is out there) mentions corn and a combination of Cluster and Styrian Golding hops. Secondly...it is actually very, VERY good. It's become one of my mainstay beers, given that I live in NYC and the closest distributor to me always has it for a reasonable price. Strongly earthy flavour combined with a pleasant sweetness from the flaked maize, along with the trademark quenching character of a pilsner...highly recommended, if you ask me! One of the few year-round examples of a Classic American Pilsner you can find in the NYC area, and an interesting little piece of history given that the recipe is based on the old Piels one (according to magazine articles about it at least). Compared to the only other reasonably-easy-to-find CAP in my area-- Upland Champagne Velvet-- it has a more malty character to it, as opposed to CV's more hoppy (thanks to the use of Tettnang) taste, and is a tad drier.

12 oz. bottle poured into pilsener
(courtesy of @TongoRad)

L: gold, mostly clear, just a slight mistiness, with an offwhite head about an inch tall and pretty sticky; lots of activity in the glass gives it a constant collar and thick skin of offwhite foam; some lacing

S: malty ... cracker, bread, sweet ... light lemon peel, some creamed corn, a pinch of floral-bitter hops; grain and sour grain; almost a toasted malt note ... toasted peaches; hint of butter

T: sweet cracker malt up front, then some creamed corn followed by a chunky bitter bite of earthy hops ... almost dirt it can be so bitter; the earthy hop flavor lingers in the aftertaste; buttery biscuits

F: very light, almost watery, but crisp from the carbonation ... works really well for the style

O: cool brew and not light on the hops; the creamed corn note is normally a turnoff for me, but for some reason I kind of like it in this beer, possibly because that sweetness is well balanced by the earthy hops

C+ / ABOVE AVERAGE

***
07.15.17 2nd impression on-draught:

Suffers from too much body and has an oddly estery yeast profile, leaving it drinking more like a Kolsch than a pilsner.

Smooth, wet, unrefreshing. Overcarbonated. Crisp.

Helles malt is at the fore here, but the mild grassy hop profile I'd look for in a good pilsner is absent here.

Drinkable but underwhelming. I'd sooner go for Radeberger, Rothaus, or the like.

It's a clean malty lager, but doesn't have the subtle floral hops of the Czech variety. I'd call this an American Pale Lager. It's bready with a touch of caramel up front, and finishes with a grassy, dry bitterness.

Braven Bushwick Pilsner draft tasted 3/25/16 at a restaurant bar.

This is a pretty good lager beer. Looks nice. Flavor is straightforward. The taste is fairly full-bodied, but I didn't find malt body or hop character. to be very distinctive.

Braven Brewing Co. "Bushwick Pilsner"
on tap @ Catfish, Brooklyn, NY
$7/10 oz. pilsner glass

Notes: Clear gold body beneath a short lived head of bright white. Average lacing, but in a bar glass who knows whether that's a good representation or not. Aroma of grainy malt and grassy hops. The flavor adds some spiciness to the hop mix. Its very firm to solid bitterness just barely balances the malt.... it's a little on the malty side, and that's reflected in its medium-full body. Clean, and it finishes nicely - not sticky or cloying. Not bad. As a basic pint I'd gladly go for this.
