This is the first beer in the California Common/Steam style that I've rated or reviewed, so I'm no expert in the style, although Anchor Steam has been one of my favorites going back into the 1970s, when it was one of the few alternatives to the standard AALs around. I need to go back and review Anchor Steam.

Watchman's House is Holy Mountain's Oaked Steam Lager, and it's really good. The appearance is amber, with a light head and lots of lacing. The taste is malty and caramel, with a substantial hop kick and a good bitter finish. I'm not sure just how I would tell this apart from an ale that was malty and caramel with a good bitter finish, but I'm impressed with Watchman's House. Quite tasty!

My first steam beer. Had at Holy Mountain. Amber and caramel in color, with strong caramel taste and moderate bitterness as well. Malts have a roasted taste. Has a heavier feel than I was expecting. Not spectacular but something different and unique to try.

A nice, smooth, even-bodied lager. Very low hop profile. Nice base grains. Slight alcohol taste. Solid wood effect from the barrels. Easy drinking. Slightly sticky finish.
